"Methinks thou dost protest too much." You can't go wrong starting an article with Shakespeare, can you?! I'll get back to him in a bit. I've recently had to do some hard selling with a couple clients who were interested in my visualization video. They were both readers of The Secret and wanted to know if my system was better than it. Impossible to say, since I've not read the book and system of visualization, but I can make a general observation that I have heard about the book and know to be true of my own system. It doesn't take into account our very own objections to our visualization. This is the primary difference in the Huna system my visualization program is based on. In Huna it's the main aspect of the program.....to find out from our own subconscious what kind of objections there may be to us wanting something new in our life. Apparently something has kept us from having it, and in Huna we assume that "something" is hidden in our own subconscious. If we don't hear that objection and overcome it, then there is no point is blindly going ahead visualizing something new when our own subconscious is working to keep us FROM having it. And Shakespeare? >From what I have heard, part of the Secret's system is the use of affirmations, and there are many other systems that preach the use of affirmations. We could get into a heated argument over this, but from the two systems I have studied, the ancient Kaballah and Huna, they both speak strongly against the use of them. This is where Shakespeare comes in. "Me thinks thou dost protest too much," from Hamlet. This is the basic objection to saying the same thing over and over again. The subconscious starts to think "Gee, he must not believe this since he has to say it over and over. I got it the first time!" That is NOT to say you wouldn't want to visualize a picture of the desired result, but for the subconscious, seeing a picture is reinforcing while repeating words diminishes the power. Words detract...pictures enforce. (See...I said we could get into an argument here!) I like this practioner's explanation even more than my own! Hi Don, Your "Argue with the Psychic" article is delightful! I so appreciate your willingness to share from an approachable, honest and down-to-earth place. For me, it makes your wisdom so much more valuable. I have worked closely with a couple of famous "gurus" and have some experience with other approaches. That is why I take the time here to applaud yours!! I can so relate to this issue you bring up about complaining clients who say your prediction was wrong. I preface readings with a frame that says that a reading is like taking an energetic CAT scan in a given moment. This energetic photograph, if you will, shows how the energies are aligned in this given moment and if you like what you are experiencing with this alignment, then you have the opportunity to foster it. If you don't like your experience, then you can look at the energetic photograph, or pattern and make adjustments. This may be just a very subtle variation on what you are already doing, but I can report that clients seem to have ceased wanting to look at me, the reader as "right or wrong" about their future, but rather see me as the reader of the energetic CAT scan in the moment which gives them the info to help influence/manage/choose their own future experience. This feels to me like a more authentic interpretation of what's going on anyway. I appreciate your work and your sharing so much, Don. Many decks of Tarot show a huge muscular man wrestling a lion to the ground, whereas the BOTA deck shows a gentle woman taming the beast. This is a lesson I keep relearning. It's our right brain, our feminine side, that has the real power....the real strength. This card is all about "control." When I teach the card, I always start with the definition of "control." It can mean to stop something. Control that child! Make it stop doing that. But it also means to "redirect." The dam "controls" the river not by stopping it but by redirecting the energy. I think of my major addiction to nicotine years ago. I tried dozens of methods to MAKE myself stop smoking. I was determined to grind that habit into the ground. At one point I actually thought of starting a business called Brutes, Inc. These would be huge hairy men hired to keep me and you from smoking/drinking/eating. For a fee, this man would make me stop. There would be no discussion; no therapy; no whining. Of course I didn't do it and it never would have worked. I remember the day I did actually stop smoking and how peaceful and calm it was. I did it by redirecting my thoughts to other pictures of what I could have by not smoking. The trip to London. Swimming a mile non-stop. It was all very gentle and loving, and it was 25 years ago. So it's no wonder this card is actually called "Gentle, Mental Control." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PSYCHIC READING ON THE ECONOMY Okay.....several of you have asked for this. I'll do a reading on the general economy. My left brain says, "You're a fool for doing this! There are too many variables. If you're wrong you'll look stupid. There will be a record of this and readers will hold you to it." My right brain says, "Hey, this is just for fun. Go for it. My clients aren't going to bet the farm on my reading." Are you? Please say you won't! But I actually do have a good record on this kind of reading. I remember many years ago being asked by Jim Bosley, a local TV morning host and resident skeptic, to be on his New Years show and predict the future for the next year. I did my shtick and forgot about it till the next year when I was asked back. For some reason, and to my horror, it never occurred to me that he would play back what I had said the year before. He did and I sat in terror wondering what in hell I'd said. I had made three major predictions about the economy, an election, and about natural disasters in the area. I was right on all three and he had video tape to prove it. Even he was impressed! When I go to my "workshop" and ask about the economy for the rest of this year, I see unemployment nationally down below 9%. I see the DOW at 12,000 give or take 200. When I drew a Tarot card on the year's economy I drew the Hanged Man card, which is perfect. It shows a man hung upside down by a foot. He's in upset, just as we are in our economy. But he's not struggling. In fact, he looks very comfortable there. This card is called "surrender" and "serenity." In the upset will come peace and serenity, and I believe it will come because the forces that put us upside down will reverse and bring us right side up. There is some comfort in knowing nearly 40% of people who subscribe to it cancel their membership in the first month. Being either dense or stubborn, it took me several more months to cancel but I did after I inadvertently sent out a vicious virus to all my followers. Sorry guys and gals! In This Issue: ARGUE WITH THE PSYCHIC? GET SERIOUS! A FAN CHIMES IN FREQUENT FLYER SPECIAL MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ARGUE WITH THE PSYCHIC?? The very thought is unsettling. The psychic lives in an ivory tower and should not be subject to mere mortal debate. >From my perspective, I actually do think I live in an ivory tower. It's often very easy for me to pontificate and pronounce what should be done in your life. But remember, I don't have to worry about such trifles as paying the bills, upsetting whole families, changing careers, and the like. Easy for me to say, "Move to Zimbabwe!" >From my clients' perspective, they often, and frighteningly so, think I live in an ivory tower and am in direct communication with God Him/Herself. They often give me much more power and credit than I deserve. Of late I have had two or three juicy "debates" about my readings. The issue in each case is similar. I make a prediction. Prediction does not come true. Why didn't I see what really happened? The curious part in these is that I actually don't think I was wrong. I'm the first to admit that I am certainly not always right and I've acknowledged that often here. But in these cases the situation is different. In each case the client took a different course of action which I contend produced therefore a new outcome. For example, let's say I predict you are about to get pregnant. Because of that information, you now use protection or stop having sex. You don't get pregnant. Psychic is wrong? I say you took a new course of action which eliminated the "prediction" and you got a new outcome. But here is the "debate." The client says I should have seen the new outcome anyway. If I truly look into the future, then I should have seen that she would take a new course of action producing a new outcome. Damn. That's a tough argument! I have an argument but admit it's laced with lameness! The client's argument is based on what I think is faulty reasoning. (When in doubt, blame someone!) It assumes that the psychic is all-knowing and sees the compete future or "reads" some life-script written in the sky in invisible ink. With that reasoning, I can see where the client argues that I should have seen the new ending. What I think actually happens, in order to save my self-serving psychic ass, is that I look into your future based on who you are now and where I see you going. Here is the path I see you on. But I firmly believe you have free will and can often easily change that path with just a small change in action. I frankly think this is the REAL reason for having a psychic reading. It isn't to know what future will happen but to see where you're headed so you can decide if you need a course correction or if you should just sit back and let 'er rip. And this is why I have always framed my readings in a counseling format rather than fortune-telling. With this future that I predict for you, let's chat about whether or not you want it and what you can do to help it happen or keep it from happening. Let's both climb down from the ivory tower and grapple with issues on the ground! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A FAN CHIMES IN Speaking of arguing with the psychic! Here are a favorite fan's comments about my recent discussions here about how this psychic business actually works. Nora is one of the few people with whom I regularly lose arguments, or, more precisely, admit to losing. I'm not sure there is an argument here, but she gives yet another side to the discuss on the psychic process. Nora Gedgaudes. Check out her website and her very interesting book on nutrition that I love so much:Primal Body Primal Mind "Allow me to chime in on your "Left-Brained Conundrum". I see psychic activity (and the imagery and sensation that accompany it) to be less a product of the left OR right brained cortex (the gray slab on top of the whole organ) and much more arising from what we call the sub-cortical brain. The sub-cortical realms of the human brain speak no verbal language, but instead the language of imagery, symbolism, sensation and emotion. The information arising from these realms is then interpreted through either or both the left or right hemisphere, better described as text (left brain) and/or context (right brain). I suspect what you refer to as "going into your workshop" is actually a process of getting the "chattering monkey" of the cortex out of the damn way so that what lies beneath is free to bubble to the surface. Yes, my friend, you do lean toward more of a left-brained analysis of such otherworldly impressions, but the left and right cortex is but a receiving and relay center. The impressions are likely first received through brain centers that are much more deep and primal. In This Issue: Left Brain Conundrum More Talking Cancer Special and Tarot Card Bundle Rate Power Coaching ------------------------------------------------------ THE LEFT BRAIN CONUNDRUM Or is it a contradiction? Or maybe I'm just confused. I have often "discussed" (read "argued") this point with other psychics and metaphysical sorts. The common belief is that things psychic come from our right brain....the emotional, feminine, symbolic side of our brain. The squishy side. I have always argued that for me the psychic process is a very left brain activity...the side of the brain that is rational, male, and literal. The grounded side. When I do readings, I only see pictures and then interpret them. I do not get feelings or senses or "intuitions" about a client. This is why I've always separated the terms "psychic" and "intuition." When I accidentally discovered my psychic process over 30 years ago, I was excited thinking I could develop my intuition and then I'd get a feeling or sense about things before I screwed up. This never became real for me. I would do psychic readings all day long for clients and then walk into brick walls on my way home! Never saw it coming. For me the psychic process was a very grounded, literal, left brain process that I employed for my clients. So, where's the conundrum? Because many clients know my readings are very left brain, they often want to give me all the left brain advice they can. When I ask what issues they want me to focus on, they sometimes give me pages of background information with details, dates, names and, worst of all, their sense or intuition about the situation. All this data cannot help but influence my psychic reading. The psychic part of me cannot divorce itself from the real world of information and opinion. This is why I ask clients to tell me what they want to work on in a session but without opinions or supporting data, and especially not what someone else has said about it. "My doctor thinks....." "I saw an astrologer who told me....." Or, God forbid, "I saw another psychic who said....." Oops. Now we're nearly dead in the water. I will have a hard time getting rid of opinions or pictures from others, especially if they are an "authority" figure. It's hard to erase that from my memory bank. (On the other hand it's wonderful when, as just happened, I hear "That's weird...you said the same thing with the same exact phrase that my astrologer just used!") The final irony is that this left brain process does not need left brain data to stimulate it. I'm even willing to entertain the idea that the psychic process may in fact originate in the right brain through symbols and emotions but this is processed through the left brain and presented in a rational, reasonable manner rather than in a squishy "feeling." We could argue this point.....And I suspect some of you will. The best one could even get printed here.....hint hint.... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TALK, TALKED, TALKING I regularly give talks about metaphysics at New Renaissance bookstore, several Portland public libraries, and Portland Community College. I'm reminded of the New Yorker cartoon I have on my office wall. A patient speaking to his psychiatrist. "I do count my blessings, but then I end up counting those of others who have more and better blessings, and that pisses me off!" In This Isssue: USE A PSYCHIC IN BUSINESS? Get serious.. GRAPE CLUSTER STRIKES AGAIN HOW THE PSYCHIC PROCESS WORKS...redux THE END CAME AND WENT ASK THE PSYCHIC ---------------------------------------- USING A PSYCHIC IN BUSINESS? You gotta be kidding! What business man or woman in their right mind would use advice from a psychic to help run their business? Actually....many do! You might be surprised. Of course most of them, especially the men, get their reading on the phone so they won't be seen coming to the psychic's office. And, oddly enough, it's often male business owners who are the most died-in-the-wool users of the psychic information. But come they do, and for a variety of issues and methods of using the information. One favorite client comes about every six months for a checkup. He brings a long list of questions. Should I put So and So in as manager of the new store? Should I expand that office? We're thinking of opening another office across the river. Should we? And who is best to run it? This business owner comes even though he admits he doesn't always follow the psychic advice, but he plays the taped reading at the next manager's meeting and uses the information as a starting point for discussion of the issues. Another long-term client with a manufacturing business comes quarterly for an estimate of how much product to make so he doesn't get stuck with too much inventory. Curiously, at the last reading there was information suggesting his manager was stealing from him. "Can't be true. He's been with me for over ten years." But within two weeks he was on the phone admitting that he discovered the manager had stolen several hundred thousand dollars over those years. "Free lunch for the psychic. You name the place!" Owners are not the only ones using the psychic insight. Often employees are seeking ways to advance in the company. As one client recently said, "Who should I be romancing? Who likes me best?" A recent client who was fired from his Fortune 500 company called for advice on where to look for a position. The reading provided him two specific companies to work with. In a week he was calling for yet another reading because not only those two companies but two others were offering him positions. "Now what? Which is the best for me?" Even the "true professionals" like doctors and lawyers use the service. Lawyers want to know how to best win a case and have even been known to step outside during a courtroom break to have an emergency reading with the psychic! And doctors, while they probably won't admit it, have been known to ask for a reading on patients they are unable to diagnose. The psychic information is no substitute for your own wise counsel but it can be one more source of insight to add to the mix before a decision is made. And as corporate consultants go, the advice is dirt cheap! -------------------------------------- GRAPE CLUSTER SUCCESS YET AGAIN Here is a note from a client all the way from Bulgaria who found a video of me on YouTube! I like this because it deals with the Pineal gland, which was of great interest to the ancients.) This particular article has to do with your pineal gland being your portal to heal the fourth dimension, however, the first two points is how I have heard it described in other articles too. Now I have done prana breathing with the intent of getting more photon light in my pineal gland - but so far I am not psychic - although I am going there. Those of you who are, have an incredible amount of photon energy in your pineal gland. Either you were born with it or an incident occurred that awakened it. I think we all have it, but do not know how to access it. But it has to do with photon energy and your pineal gland. I was wrong. After several hundred dollars in equipment, dozens of hours researching and studying, and 6, count them SIX trips to Apple, I am willing to accept defeat, a rare acknowledgment from a Virgo. It all came crashing down when I printed out the THREE pages of instructions and got stuck halfway through, resulting in yet another call for tech support. I've been a real estate broker since 1969 and a psychic since 1980.....so long that I can no longer even do the math since it adds up to more than all my toes and fingers! In all that time I have always made a point of NOT mixing the two careers. You will never see me go into a trance and say, "I see you in a lovely split-entry on Elm Street. Or could it be Helm Street?" However, there is apparently nothing stopping many of my clients from using a psychic process in real estate. And I want to encourage that! I recently sent several listings to a new client and got luke-warm response on them all, and then suddenly I get a screaming email back saying, "That's the house! I saw it psychically several years ago. That's the deck; that's the treed setting. Don't you DARE show that to anyone else!" While that may be a unique case, it is not at all unusual to hear clients vividly decribe what they want. Many have had a dream. Some have had a 'vision' appear. Sometimes the picture reminds them of a house in their background or something they vaguely remember from a picture or a movie. For whatever reason, the client has a vivid picture stuck in their subconscious and they want to find that house. I believe that's why nothing really fits well until that magical moment when you walk into a house and know it's the one for you. It often goes against all reason. I wasn't the area you said you wanted. There are things wrong with the house. But you KNOW it was the house buried in your subconscious. And then there is the reverse process.....me giving real estate advice during a reading, which I consider fair game. I would never do such a reading for someone who could become a real estate client but I often do readings for people across the country and give my opinion on how they can best sell property or what kind of property they're really looking for. I remember one startling reading not long ago when I told the clients their house would "sell out from under you" to a neighbor who knocked on their door. Even at the time I said it seemed highly unlikely in such a down market. But last week I hear from them that the exact scenario happened, the house is sold, and they are sent packing! Point being: don't be afraid to ask the psychic the real estate question if you're out of my area. If you're local, you'll have to go to another psychic for advice. As a favorite client asked recently as she was about to sign on the dotted line, "Quick...do a reading and tell me if they'll accept this offer!" In recent decades, medical science used to call it the "appendix of the brain" and declared it useless. Now science is suggesting it may be the Master Gland of the entire endocrine system. REAL ESTATE REBOUND ---------------------------------------------------------------- "IF YOU KNOW WHAT'S GOOD FOR YOU, ....." I can hear the echo of that phrase from my mother's grave, and I suspect many of you heard something simlar from your mother. And of course, I did know what was good for me.....because Mom had just told me what was good for me! Apparently I wasn't doing it fast enough for one or more reasons. Maybe I didn't like the choice, since I really didn't choose it. Maybe I was just lazy and would rather be swimming in the creek. Maybe I was just hoping for an easier way out if I just waited long enough. All normal childish responses. Now that I'm much older and much more adult, things are....are....well, frankly, just about the same. Damn! I hate it when I find myself knowing what's good for me and yet not doing it for some of the same childish reasons. I didn't choose to make sugar and carbs so unhealthy. Why can't 'they' make a pill that disolves fat and builds muscle without having to go to the gym? Maybe if I wait awhile the problem will just go away on its own. Sadly, I am apparently not alone in this childish behavior since I see it often in my coaching clients especially. "You didn't do what you said you knew to be good for you?" Why is that? Why would a reasonable adult who has decided what would be good for them, NOT do it? I believe it's because we are still dealing with the parent/child dynamic. It was the parent who told me I had to do something and that set up some built-in antagonism. Now as an adult I think I'm dealing with the same antagonism between my adult parent personality and my subconscious which is the child-like part of me. "You can't make me do that!" And the underlying problem is that the child part of me didn't make the choice....wasn't part of the decision-making process....doesn't have the same vision in mind as the adult part. I believe much of the antagonism could be resolved by engaging the child in the discussion and the decision-making. If the adult and child both have the same goal in mind, the same vision, and have agreed on how to accomplish it, then the resistance will be vastly reduced. How you get that agreement is the issue,and there are many systems and processes for you to do that. Now when someone....notably a politician or fundamentalist....says something mind-numbingly stupid and I hear myself asking, "How can they believe such nonsense," all I have to do is look at the certificate to be reminded that in the face of all reasonable evidence to the contrary, some people will believe in anything. I feel calmer already. ---------------------------------------------------------------- STILL ON THE FENCE ABOUT COACHING? Yesterday someone said, "You must be doing lots of coaching for people looking for work." When I looked at my coaching roster, I was surprised to see that only a couple clients were actually looking for work. Most clients are doing what I would call "life-style" changes. Working on health; improving a marriage; looking for relationships; completing projects that overwhelm them. Of course, people without jobs are in a catch 22 position of not being able to afford coaching. Ah, the irony. If you're wishing you could do some coaching on a job issue or any other issue, let me try and help. Here are a few things you can do. First, go to the website and download the coaching forms and fill them out as if you were going to hire me. Many people find that just that process moves them along on their issue. Second, fill in the forms and then come for a free sample session. That often tells you whether the process is going to help you or not. Third, under some circumstances, I'm willing to help by "running a tab" on the coaching for a few sessions until you can afford it. I'm so convinced coaching can help clients progress that I will gamble a bit. Of course, I want security in the form of the deed to your house or your first born. No wait. I'll just take the deed. Been there done that! Last issue I challenged you, dear readers, for a better explanation of the psychic process than I've been able to come up with. I was surprised at the number of very thoughtful responses and I thank you all for contributing. I have a cerebral group of clients! All the explanations were plausible but two stood out so I print one this issue and the other next issue. >From C.J. (Slightly edited) First, you have to accept that there is something beyond this body that you're in. There must be something more. Maybe something that connects us, perhaps runs through each of us -- past, present and future. A collective consciousness? God? A cosmic force? No one knows for sure, but if you can't accept that there is an unseen force or wisdom that exists that is bigger than all of us -- you'll never be able to accept or understand that there is a psychic process. Some psychics hear things, some see things (some with eyes closed, some with eyes open), some feel things, some have a gut feeling. We're all different, so psychics experience things differently. However we receive knowledge, this feeling or insight -- it's a connection to that "something bigger." Many people believe that we're born with this connection to that "something bigger" and then lose it as we grow up. I used to be able to find things. All things. A family member would have lost something, and I'd see it in my head and take them straight to it. Some of the things were in places I'd never been, cupboards I wasn't allowed in, etc. My parents were convinced I was a snooper with a photographic memory. I wasn't. You don't "lose" a photographic memory, and I don't have one. I could also see solutions. I remember one time around age 5, my mother (back in the fabulous macrame days) was teaching a craft class and her enormous project had somehow wound up in a big unintentional ball of knots. I looked at her dilemma and noticed one string. It's like that one strand lit up for me. I pulled that string and the entire knotted mess came completely undone -- and the result was her beautiful (well, still ugly) unfinished macrame project. She was deliriously happy and thought it was a funny coincidence that I reached down and pulled that one string that fixed it all. But everything weird that happened, like the time in England when I told my parents about a cool sign that was coming up just around the bend -- and then it did -- leaving all the adults in the van silent -- because I'd never been to that part of England before -- were all "coincidences." Anything too weird had to be a coincidence. As I grew up, I accepted this, and whatever connection I had to the "something bigger" faded away. Some people don't lose the connection, though. Some people have experiences that seem to open a channel, or provide an antenna that connects them to that "something bigger." It seems that people who are able to quiet the "grown up" in them who says it's "just a coincidence," have an easier time connecting to the "something bigger." They accept it's real. Once they accept it, the connection gets stronger and information is accessed more easily. Sometimes the connection even needs to be tamed (we don't want to know everything about everyone we meet). Many people with a strong connection develop or construct a very structured way to access that connection, so they can only access it when they want to, seeing only the information they're seeking. It becomes their personal psychic process. The "something bigger," mind you, doesn't require a "process." It's there, always. Many believe it could be accessible to anyone. Many believe it actually is accessed by all, at one point or another. That feeling you get before you leave your home, that urges you to check the stove -- only to discover you have left a burner on. That call you make to your Grandfather, to say "I love you" on the very day he will suddenly pass away. I'll never forget that phone call. I often thank that "something bigger" for connecting with me that day. Perhaps there are psychic processes that can be used from both sides. From our side, and from the side of the "something bigger." Sometimes we want to reach it, sometimes it wants to reach us. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE END IS NEAR! Very, very soon I will no longer be using cassette tapes to record readings in person or on the phone. Soon I will not suffer the humiliation of watching a client's face fall when I hand them a tape. "What is this," one young new client asked. Seriously, I don't think she has ever seen a tape. I wanted to bring her to my storage unit and show her hundreds of opera records.....remember, those plasticy kinds of discs that went round and round and music came out of them?! I have in my possession as of this morning the four....yes FOUR....pieces of equipment I need to record our session onto my Ipod Touch and then send it to the Ethers where it will be stored so you can download it in any fashion or format you like. Just give me a couple tries to test the equipment and to make sure my prefrontal lobe has not short-circuited with one too many downloads of technology! ------------------------------------- REAL ESTATE REBOUND I told you so! Just as I predicted.....the real estate market is rebounding faster than any of the experts predicted. At least it has in the Portland market, where March sales showed the largest increase in 47 years! And if sales increase, price increases cannot be far behind, so if you were waiting till the market bottomed out, your wait may be over. There are still many homes in foreclosure and in "short" sales where some have sold for 30% or more off the normal prices. I'm just saying.... © Copyright 2003 Practical Metaphysics. In This Issue: OVERCOMING YOUR OWN OBJECTIONS FREE READING TAURUS AND THE INTUITIVE VOICE WRITERS AND WANNABES ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ OVERCOMING YOUR OWN OBJECTIONS When I used to teach a 6 hour visualization class we spent about an hour getting clear on what each student wanted to manifest and then we spent about THREE hours working through all of the students' own objections to what they most wanted in their lives. "They had objections to their own desires," you may well ask? Indeed. That's why we do a visualization process. We want something in our lives that we have been unable to attain. And the primary reason we don't have it in our lives is because of some subconscious blockage and we need to hear about that objection from our own subconscious and then find a way to "clear the path" as Huna calls it. Find a way to convince our own subconscious to give up its hold on that block. (This whole process is, dare I say it, brilliantly described in my video series on my website: donclarkson.com ) Here are a few techniques I've developed to overcome those objections. You can discuss this with Lowself, the Huna term for the subconscious, or just have a discussion with yourself on your own terms. My favorite method is Bargaining. I don't think Dr. Spock would approve, but sometimes we as parents say, "If you stop crying, I'll buy you an ice cream cone." It often works. And I still do that with my Lowself. I usually ask, "What would you take to give up this objection?" He often says, "A week at the beach." I usually say, "Okay...how about a weekend?" We have a deal. I have a favorite client who has the cheapest Lowself I've ever heard of. The client was a competitive bodybuilder with an impeccable diet. When he wants to double his business sales or something equally daunting, he promises his little boy a piece of chocolate cake. It apparently works every time! Point is, we all need to find our bargaining point. Dr. Spock bedamned. Another technique is "Just the Facts." This sounds too simple to be work, but it's often successful. We all have our built-in patterns. One of mine is about spending money. Parents worried about money; lived through the Great Depression; yada, yada, yada. It wasn't even my experience and yet the echo of the Depression resonates in me financially. Want to buy a flat screen TV? I hear Lowself saying, "You'll spend all that money; we'll go broke; we can't pay the mortgage; we'll be living under the Burnside bridge with the other bums." It's not realistic...but it feels real. But now all I have to do to overcome his objection is to state the facts. We have so much money in the bank, more in the IRA, and we have a net worth that allows us to spend some money. In my mind I literally show him my net worth sheet. End of problem. Really. It can be just that easy. BUT, you have to go through the process and overcome the objection. If not, Lowself will hold onto it and keep you from your desire. If you're doing the visualization process from my video, or if you're doing your own thing, the main point in all this is to keep the dialogue with your subconscious open. Let him or her have their say and vent. Often that's all it takes to overcome a major objection that has held you from your desire. -------------------------------------------------------------- FREE READING TO THE WINNER.... ... I was recently asked by a long-time client to answer several probing questions about the psychic process for his PhD dissertation. One question was to explain how the psychic process works. I don't have an explanation. I spent several years reading and studying and asking others to explain it and finally gave up in despair. I took my mentor Diana Stone's gentle and sage advice: "Just shut up and do it!" I'm also reminded of Woody Allen's comment in Hannah and Her Sisters. He asked his father for an explanation of what happens when we die. "You ask me to explain that when I can't understand how the can opener works? Oy!" But if you, Dear Reader, think you have a way of explaining how the psychic process works...AND if I think you make real sense....you can have a free reading and test your theory! I'll print the winning answer here also. In case of a tie, the winner will be decided by a dart throw. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HAPPY BIRTHDAY TAURUS! If you are a Taurusian, you may take $20 off any reading through May. And here is the Taurus Tarot card, one of the most difficult cards to understand and explain, in my experience. Part of the difficulty is that the picture does not give away much of the true meaning, so you better 'know your stuff' about it before you start doing tarot readings for yourself and frightened friends. Just looking at the picture and guessing won't make it with this one. This is the Intuition card. The inner voice. The still, small voice within. And no, it is NOT the psychic card. Intuition and psychic are two very separate processes. More on that another time. This is the one true caution card in the deck. The Hierophant, the "inner pope," holds up his fingers saying, "Be still and listen." This is also the most heretical card in the deck and the one people in the Middle Ages used to prove they were NOT heretical! It looks like the Pope in Rome. If caught with a deck of cards, how can I be found heretical when I have a picture of His Holiness??? But the joke was on the Inquisition types. What the card is really saying is that the still, small voice within you has the power and authority of the Pope in Rome. In effect, it's thumbing its nose at the Pope and his so-called powers. Light up that pile around the stake! But here's the really, really difficult part about this card, and I LOL when I think of the many classes I've taught. Of the 22 cards I teach, this and one other card ALWAYS have the lowest attendance. People get sick, have visitors, dogs eat their homework, or whatever excuse they can dream up to not come to this class. Because IT'S HARD to not only hear from the still small voice but to really trust it. And there's the catch. This is the fifth card in the deck and the fifth "voice." Someone always asks, "Yeah but...how do I know this is my intuitive voice talking and not my subconscious or some other voice?" Practice. Lots of practive and keeping score. When I hear that little voice say things like "Go ahead...you can have a drink....eat the whole cheesecake...play hooky," I know that is my subconscious in the form of a little boy. I know what it sounds like and I don't listen, or try not to. But the intuitive voice is totally different. It never flatters; never lies; never intrudes; never threatens; never demands. That's why it's the "still, small" voice. You have to listen very carefully and TAKE SCORE. Meaning....you need to keep a record of what it says and if it doesn't speak truth to you over time, then it is NOT the Hierophant within you and you must give up listening to it and seek another voice. I began my day by taking a cup of coffee back to my warm bed on a rainy day and watching the morning news. Gotta be an informed citizen! I got to watch blown-up body parts in the middle east somewhere, not sure where; three Americans ambushed in Mexico and their bleeding dead bodies lying in the street; still-hungry children clamboring for food in Haiti; and two local teenage boys' bodies being hauled up the bank from their submerged car. And have a nice day! By the time I reached the computer on my desk, I wondered why I was feeling kind of low. Then, as part of my morning routine, I checked in briefly with my subconscious, or what we call in Huna, Lowself, my 9 year old little kid. And thank God I did! When I asked him why we were feeling a bit down, he said, "Jesus Christ....look at how you started your day! Those pictures terrified me!" (He learned to swear from Dad, not me mind you.) Out of the mouth of babes. Both Huna and the Tarot/Kaballah teach us the importance of pictures. Remember the old adage: a picture is worth a thousand words. It may literally be true. And that can be bad. One picture can be downloaded directly into our subsconscious and implanted there forever. It would take many, many words to have the same impact on the subconscious. And remember, the subconscious does not know the difference between real and imagined. Those body parts are REAL to it. My little boy actually believes everything he sees! Therefore, I need to be very careful what I let him see. We have all watched parents, perhaps ourselves with our own kids, shielding children from ugliness. We think as adults we are immune to the impact of these ugly pictures. But remember, we all have that child-like part of us that is watching and taking it all in. My proposal. My challenge to you and to myself. Let's not watch the news for a month. That is NOT to say we should be uninformed. But let's not watch it on TV. We can read the same story in the paper or online and it will not have the negative impact that watching pictures has on us. We stay informed but we stop terrorizing our little kid inside. I'm going to try it for a month to see if that sensitive child-like part of me is less anxious and nervous. And if you try it with me, please let me know what reaction you get so we can report back! In This Issue: IS THERE A GOD? (Film at Eleven...) TAROT CARD (The Fool) LOVE STORIES (Yours and Mine) TAKING IT IN THE SHORTS (More Film at Eleven?) ------------------------------------------------------ IS THERE A GOD? Jeezzz...what prompted that, you might well ask?! Actually, I was prompted to deal with the issue after two people who bought my Visualization Video (available at the website by the way: www.donclarkson.com) asked about the final segment where they are asked to turn their visualization over to High Self. "Is that supposed to be God," one person asked. "What if I don't have a High Self? What if I don't believe in God? How can I turn it over to him/her/it?" Damn. I hate it when people ask difficult questions like that! I'm not here to prove or disprove God, but I can discuss the concept of High Self. And yes, you DO have a High Self, like it or not! I'm reminded of an AA meeting I was in decades ago when a man new to recovery finally spoke. He was having a very hard time staying sober, and he had an even more difficult time accepting AA's concept of a Higher Power. We were all asked to turn ourselves over to a Higher Power. Yikes. He didn't believe in God or HP. He spent many hours sitting on his bed pondering his unhappy state and found himself tracing the pattern on the bedspread with his fingers for hours. Suddenly one day he 'got it'...the concept of a Higher Power. He realized that he had no idea how to make his own bedspread. But someone or something out there did know how to manufacture such things. He realized there are forces outside of himself that are more powerful than he is. For the time being, he announced, Higher Power...GOD...would be his bedspread. Whatever works! In HUNA, the Hawaiian concept on which the visualization video is based, we are told that there is indeed a God out there, but we should waste no time trying to discover it or understand it. The concept of God is so far beyond us that we will never understand. Our job is to understand and control our own subconscious mind. God will take care of itself. Perhaps an analogy could be the computer and the Internet. You use them both and if you're like me you have little understanding of the Internet. I could spend a lifetime understanding how the thing works and learn the technology of it. But why? I can use it without understanding how it works or questioning its very existence. My time is better spent understanding how to use my own instrument, the computer, which is connected to the Higher Power of the Internet. I also love the way Tarot and Kaballah deal with the issue of God and High Self. I'm fascinated that these two ancient mystical systems, one developed in the deserts of the Middle East and the other in the islands of the South Pacific both have the same concept of God. You can read more about Tarot God below, but both systems place God outside of the human system and spend little or no time dealing with or trying to understand God. They just USE the power of the idea of God to accomplish what they want. Works for me! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE FOOL No, sorry. This isn't God either! This is the Tarot/Kaballah way of portraying High Self...that part of us that is always heading onto a new uncharted path. This is HOPE. Huna and Tarot both say the same thing here. High Self is our connection to the Divine...God...Source...whatever you want to call it. God or Source in the Fool picture is actually the white hot sun above the Fool with its rays pushing him off the ledge. I like to call this concept of God the Urging. There is something urging him to take a new path. Something that infuses him with hope. I'm reminded of my mother's last months in a nursing home. She had been a typical wife, mother, housewife with the attendant hopes and dreams I would imagine. But seeing her confined to a bed in a nursing home made me feel sad that she no longer had any hope. Then one evening as I was leaving, she said she hoped the weather was better tomorrow and she hoped the tomato plant she had planted in the courtyard of the nursing home would have a tomato on it. I nearly teared up as I suddenly saw the Fool card. Hope can still be found even in a tomato! The main thing to remember from this card is that the Fool keeps his head up looking up to his vision rather than looking down into the scary valley. In short, the card suggests keeping your VISION in your mind, not all the problems and steps you will have to take to get there. If we telescope all that will have to be done on any path, we'll probably be scared off from taking the trip at all! This is why in the visualization system I teach in the video, we are asked to visualize the picture of what we want several times per day. We need to keep our mind on the vision...even if it's just a tomato...not on what we might have to overcome to get to the vision. ----------------------------------------------------------------- LOVE STORIES You know what's coming. That mushy time of year that is beloved by some and loathed by many. Don't make me do all the work. I'd like to hear from you if you have a love story for the Valentine season. Email me: donclarkson@comcast.net -------------------------------------------- REAL ESTATE UPDATE "Taking it in the Shorts" I don't want to wear out this idea, but just to say again that if you have ever considered buying real estate, this may be the best time in generations. The sad horror stories of people losing their homes has an opposite story of many people being able to finally afford a home through buying a foreclosed home or a 'short sale' home. And just what is a "Short Sale" you may ask? My flip definition is that someone takes it in the shorts! That someone is usually the property owner but also the lender. When the value of the property is now less than the mortgage amount, and the owner needs to sell, they negotiate with the bank to "sell short" by getting the lender to take less than they are owed. It's better than letting the property go into foreclosure, and the lender knows that, because the foreclosure process takes many months and lots of money. Lenders often prefer to take less than go through the process. The point is...a buyer can get a real deal! I recently sold a penthouse condo for $445,000 that sold two years before for $860,000. As sales increase and inventory goes down, the prices will naturally start going up and these tremendous "deals" will cease to exist. Get my point??? © Copyright 2003 Practical Metaphysics. In This Issue: Why Most Visualizations Don't Work Ask the Psychic In The Nature of a Favor Women's Wisdom Circles ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- WHY MOST VISUALIZATIONS DON'T WORK God knows there are dozens of books, tapes, methods out there teaching you how to visualize. But nearly weekly I hear from clients who complain that they've been doing their process for weeks or months or even years and they're still waiting for something to happen. Almost always when we start digging for the reason it doesn't work, we come to the same answer. There was a blockage in their own subconscious. There is a part of them that does not want the very thing they are trying to manifest. How can this be? Like driving with the brakes on! The problem is they are stuck in their conscious mind wanting this or that thing, and they have not analyzed why they have never gotten it before or why they keep getting bad versions of what they desire. I think of the woman who diligently visualized to create new relationships. And it always worked, she proudly said! Only one small issue. She always created physically abusive men! STOP DOING THE VISUALIZATION, I said. Stop until you fix the kink in the process. If you continue you will simply create the next bad relation. She needed to stop and dialogue with her own subconscious to hear how that little girl felt about having a new relationship. And it's the damdest thing. Our own subconscious often has its own reasons to keep us FROM the very thing we want. Sometimes those reasons are perfectly valid and sometimes they are nonsense based on something Mom or Dad said when we were five. Whatever the source of the conflict, you must hear about it and then overcome it. You are the parent to this child-like part of yourself and you must not let it decide what kind of relationship you have or what your next career should be. You have to take charge of this out of control child and get what you want! This is the main aspect of a HUNA visualization that is different from any other form I know. It teaches you to dialogue with the subconscious, hear its fears and objections to what you want, and then teaches you to overcome your own objections so you can move on to what you really desire. It took pressure from us both to get you to go against your 'rules' and have another person in the room during a reading. Maybe I understand better now! In the reading you said I was about to be presented with a "job you can't refuse," even though it was two states away. You feared the man I was dating was also dating another woman. You felt there was pain in my left hip and/or leg. None of it was true. However, all those things came true for my sister! She first discovered her husband was having a long term affair. Then she was offered a job that she normally would never have considered because it involved a move, but since she had decided to leave her husband the prospect of moving was okay so she took the job which was a huge advancement for her. In the process of moving she hurt her lower back and has pain radiating down her left leg. Can it be you were reading her and not me??? How can this be? Amazed and Confused Dear A and C; Next time...listen to the psychic the first time! And this is a lesson for me to NEVER go against my own rules, even with two beautiful and persuasive women. Never again....I promise. This is indeed what happened. I read your sister and not you. Why that is I'm not sure. I sometimes think it has to do with the dominant personality. Maybe it's some kind of cosmic short circuit. But it does happen. I laugh to remember the first time when I told a woman about the death of her beloved black dog; her long battle with her mother; her first sexual experience with the camp counselor down by the lake. None of it was true, she said. But then I looked at her friend who had pushed her way into the room to hear the reading, and she was beat red and FURIOUS. "How dare you reveal those things without my permission!" Months later I ran into them in a restaurant and the poor woman nearly crawled out the bathroom window to escape being seen by me! Or an even better story is the time I was the guest speaker at Diana Stone's class. The Great Psychic is going to talk and then actually do a reading in front of the class to demonstrate his remarkable abilities. When the time came for the reading, with her usual dramatic flair, Diana dimmed the lights so I could commune with the ethers. I avoided chosing one woman who had been pestering me all evening, and instead chose a beautiful perky young girl. I did my schtick. I tuned into the ethers and revealed that she had a horrible relation with a hateful mother. "But...but I thought she loved me!" Not that bitch, I said! You seem in serious danger of losing your job. You either just lost it or are about to. "Oh my God no! I just started a new job!" And your husband scares you. I see him taking a plastic knife that has a retractable blade and he's stabbing you in the back. Do you ever feel like your husband is stabbing you in the back? "I'm a single lesbian." Dear Jesus. I gave up. Diana mercifully ended the pitiful reading by graciously saying, "Well....this kind of thing doesn't always work." People stood up to leave when suddenly Diana called for everyone to sit back down. She had great news. It seems the woman whom I had rejected for the reading was so put off by it that she "projected herself" into the seat where the other woman was. And to my thankful amazement she said everything I had said was true about her. Her husband had just days before pretended to stab her in the back with that very toy knife in a store, and it thoroughly upset her. She would have left him but she just lost her job and was trapped. So, there are the reasons why I don't have other people in the room during a reading!!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASKING FAVORS Category 1: You just never know.... Category 2: It's not what you know but whom.... I've just finished adapting a stage play I wrote into a screenplay. Some of the reviews are in: "OMG." "Wow." "I can't finish it....too upsetting." And my favorite, "What play? Did you send it to me?" It's an adult screenplay in the nature of "Doubt" and "Blackbird," dealing with clergy sexual abuse. A laugh a minute....
