Christmas Wish: Season of Light
Year End Special

A SEASON FOR LIGHT
As a Solstice and seasonal kind of message, I wanted to share some information about one of the Tarot's most significant cards, the Hermit, and how this archetype shines for us.
But first, a bit of historical review. All the northern hemisphere cultures have some kind of festival or ceremony around this time of year for fairly obvious reasons. The light is leaving! It's scary! The sky may be falling! Primitives did all kinds of crazy things to entice the sun god to return, and sure enough...every year it worked. It worked so well that the pagans were reluctant to give up these ceremonies and this became a serious problem for the new Christian religion. To solve the problem, the Catholic Church simply moved Christ's birth from probably some time in late August or September to near the winter solstice to capitalize on this ceremony already in place. (It wasn't until 1994 the church admitted any of this of course, but better late than never!)
The interesting aspect of all the myths surrounding Solstice is that they all see the 'light' as an external. It's the Sun. It's Christ. It's a god of whatever nature who brings the light back to us.
Not so in the Tarot, as portrayed in the Hermit card. The Hermit is on top of the mountain surrounded by deep darkness. It must be Solstice time in this card! And in this darkness, he stands on the highest point and shines a light for others on their path. But the irony here is that 'he' isn't yet another savior 'out there' who is coming to save you. 'He' is 'you.' The hermit is an archetype of a part of you that has light to shine. You have the light available to you from within. And others are watching because, like it or not, you ARE on a pinnacle. You are visible. You are a beacon for others to see and follow.
And there is the fear. If we carry our own light, yet are being watched by others, just what kind of light are we giving off? What kind of model do we want to be? It is unfortunately human nature to look outside ourselves to others for the light, so perhaps we need to be conscious and careful about how we appear to others. As the Tarot says, every thought we think, every word we speak, every action we make produces ripples throughout the universe.
So once again we are presented with irony from the cards. Our true light...our passion, our energy, our purpose...comes from within and yet on the other hand we are being watched by others and we ourselves are modeling ourselves after others. In the end, the word 'responsibility' comes to mind. We should be mindful of our affect on others and do what we consciously can to raise the spirit of the world, especially in this the darkest and scariest of times.

Polarity is Your Friend!

POLARITY IS YOUR FRIEND!
Since the last election especially, we hear much about how the country is polarized; political parties are polarized; cultural mores are polarized. Whenever we hear this, it's presented in a negative context. I think the underlying message is really "Can't we all just get along?" Can't we all think the same and have no conflict or controversy?
No, actually, we can't. And we shouldn't want that. It's called bland, stagnant, dead.
As per usual, I find great solace in the ancient Tarot, where polarity is probably the most common symbol, found in every card. Black and white; male and female; good and bad; hot and cold.
On the most elemental level, which is critical to the Tarot, at the atomic level we see polarity. Atoms have positive and negative energies that fight each other and create a spinning motion. Action. Forward movement. So on the most elemental level, polarity is response. Response to energy. The dance between two contrasting forces. And this is good! Without it the universe would go flaccid!
But the really interesting point from the Tarot is in the Wheel of Fortune card, which is all about spinning energy. If you think of looking at the wheel, it looks two dimensional. But it's not. Behind the wheel is a spiral. The wheel has come spinning from the universe into your face. And this is a huge lesson. The wheel never comes back to the same place because the wheel itself has moved on and is spiraling out. So what's that got to do with us? The same is true for us. We are never at the same place. Because of the spinning motion in our lives set in motion by contrasting forces we deal with, we set ourselves into a spiral motion ever expanding outward. We grow, in other words!
We are now starting to see this very concept in the national situation. Because one political party won, and because one set of beliefs is dominant, there will be an equal and opposite response from the other polarity. And it's this dance between the two poles that produces forward movement in the issues. It may be hard to discern at the time, but perspective always shows the forward movement. Keep the faith, in other words.
But a word of caution. Because these polarities are REAL energies, you can get seriously worn out by all that spiraling motion. You need to choose your battles very carefully so you can be potent in them.
And you may not like it. I said that polarity is important and necessary and keeps the universe developing, but I didn't say you'd always like it! And be aware that it has taken almost exactly a month for me to get out of my fears in order to elevate my thoughts to this intellectual level. The rest of the month I've had nearly nightly dreams of being chased by Nazis. 'Nuff said.
-----------------------------------------------------------
COULD BE YOUR GIFT TO THE COMMUNITY
I'm working with a group of local coaches in a pilot project to bring coaching techniques to disadvantaged youth in Portland. What we're needing at this point are two things:
First, we're looking for experienced coaches with cultural and/or ethnic diversity to offset our 'white bread' look! If you or someone you know fits this description, I'd like to hear from them.
Second, as part of the project we will be looking for people in the community who shine as leaders in their field. We want to match students with these successful members of the community so they have a real role model they can meet. If you know of people in the community, or know someone who does know them, please let me know. We want to dazzle these kids a bit! These may be well known people the kids might recognize, or they can be unknown but dynamic leaders in their field. An artist? Performer? Political leader? Athlete?
---------------------------------------------------
YOU, ME AND THE IRS
Far be it from me to understand, let alone explain, the workings of the Internal Revenue Service. And before you do anything, consult your accountant. But most people who come to me for coaching, and many who come for psychic readings, claim me as a deduction. They list me as a consultant. And who can argue with that?
Think about it. It might make the difference in your thinking. Having your company pay for the service, or at least getting to deduct it from your taxes, could make the difference between having and not having my services.
--------------------------------------------------
REVERSAL IN THINKING
For a couple years my goal has been to eliminate my print newsletter and get everyone receiving just Psychic Phlashes because this is so much easier, faster, and cheaper. But now I recognize, along with most people doing newsletters, that this goal is not going to work. Ezines are quick, but they are also very quick and easy to delete! When you are busy with too much mail, I know you just hit Delete, whereas if you have my newsletter sitting around, you probably will at least glance at it. And many people report they like to curl up with the newsletter or give it to friends, and they can't do that with an email.
With this in mind, I'm reversing myself and now asking for your mail address. I will continue to send Psychic Phlashes but also my print newsletter which will have different content and not be a print version of this Ezine. Please send me an email with your street address if you think I don't have it or you have not gotten a newsletter in several months.
------------------------------------------------------
GIFT IDEA
A one-of-a-kind gift, one size fits all, unlikely to be duplicated....a gift certificate for a psychic reading, either an email read or a 30or 60 minute phone or private session. Or perhaps you know someone who could benefit from coaching. You could gift them the intake sessions, or pay for a certain number of session. Not only will you get lots of points for the thoughtful gift but they might actually benefit, learn, grow!
Gift certificates available. Call 503-295-9777 or email me.

Just Because We Need a Laugh...

JUST FOR THE FUN OF IT:
The Ranch Hand
A successful rancher died and left everything to his devoted
wife. She was a very good-looking woman, and determined to keep the ranch, but knew very little about ranching, so she decided to place an ad in the newspaper for a ranch hand.
Two men applied for the job. One was gay and the other a drunk.
She thought long and hard about it, and when no one else applied she decided to hire the gay guy, figuring it would be safer to have him around the house than the drunk.
He proved to be a hard worker who put in long hours every day and knew a lot about ranching. For weeks the two of them worked, and the ranch was doing very well. Then one day, the rancher's widow said to the hired hand, "You have done a really good job, and the ranch looks great. You should go into town and kick up your heels."
The hired hand readily agreed and went into town one Saturday night. One o'clock came, however, and he didn't return. Two o'clock, and no hired hand.
He returned around two-thirty, and upon entering the room, he found the rancher's widow sitting by the fireplace with a glass of wine, waiting for him. She quietly called him over to her. "Unbutton my blouse and take it off," she said. Trembling, he did as she directed.
"Now take off my boots." He did as she asked, ever so slowly.
"Now take off my socks." He removed each gently and placed them neatly by her boots.
"Now take off my skirt." He slowly unbuttoned it, constantly watching her eyes in the fire light.
"Now take off my bra." Again, with trembling hands, he did as he was told and dropped it to the floor.
"Now," she said, "take off my panties." By the light of the fire, he slowly pulled them down and off.
Then she looked at him and said, "If you ever wear my clothes into town again, you're fired."

--------------------------------------------------------------
IT'S NOT ABOUT BEING RIGHT
God knows I love being right when I do a psychic reading. I love hearing from people who say that something came true just as I had predicted, and especially when it's a surprise to them. But being right is really not the most valuable aspect of a reading. The value in a reading comes from what the client does with the information.
I call my readings 'psychic counseling' for this very reason. I don't do carnival fortune telling. I bring up pictures that relate to a client's life and then we discuss what they could mean, what the client can do to let the picture come to life OR what they can do to keep it from coming true. I often challenge clients by saying "Make me wrong!" Don't get fired. Don't get sick. Do something.
I caution clients before they leave that having a reading does not change anything in their life. They leave my office and will have the same experiences and meet the same people as they would have without a reading. The one change is their AWARENESS as they go through those same experiences. With the new awareness they may hear something they would have missed without the reading; they may notice something they could have not seen. I think a reading turns a person into some form of fly paper! As they go through time and space, things stick to them now that would have fallen off without the reading.
The value in a reading is how it makes a person think and reevaluate their situation. Then they can decide if they want to work toward making a prediction come true or work to keep it from coming true. But either way, the burden of value is on the client, not on the psychic. If a client takes in the information, rethinks their situation, then takes a course of action opposite of my prediction, so be it. I think that's great. They have taken charge of their life or situation and made an informed choice.
A reading is best thought of as a catalyst for change, not an end in itself.

DEAR PSYCHIC COACH
(If you'd like a free public mini reading, send me your question with Dear Psychic Coach in the subject line. don@donclarkson.com)
Dear Psychic Coach,
I finally made some progress and dropped over 45 lbs. over the last half year. I still have about 40 to lose. I'm finally reaching a point I haven't been at [with my weight] for over 14 years. Now I seem to keep sabotaging myself. I can't seem to stick with it. I go up and down 5-6 lbs. at a time. I keep managing to get myself back on track, but not for long. I frighten myself with the thought of losing control and not being able to get back on track, though I don't really believe that will happen because I'm too determined. Still, it's scary and frustrating. I have some ideas what the resistance is about, but I need to get myself unstuck and am not sure how to accomplish this. Wondered what thoughts come to your mind re: this issue for me? Sincerely, frustrated
Dear Frustrated:
Don't get me started! I've spent much of my life overcoming addiction to nicotine and alcohol and still working on sugar. It's not easy. But it's very necessary. Let me speak to your issue not from a psychic standpoint but from the Tarot.
The Tarot says 'First the body, then the mind, then the spirit." This is a major concept in the cards and could take books to explain, but simply put, first we need to learn how to control our body, then we can move on to mind and spirit. Most of us want to leap over the first two and just get spiritual. I used to seek spiritual nirvana while drinking a fifth of liquor a day and smoking two packs of cigarettes. Can't be done. There is nothing 'spiritual' about physical abuse.

The card most closely associated with your issue is the Strength card. The lion represents the physical, untamed animal nature of us. The woman represents the subconscious. And note the irony of the title. We typically think of strength as masculine, muscular, and hard. But here it is feminine, gentle and soft. This card is called "Gentle, mental control." The point is to first get the subconscious under control and that part of you will then gently control the animal appetites. And in Tarot, the way we control the subconscious is through pictures, which is why the Tarot has for hundreds of years been shown in picture form.
Let me suggest that you get a clear vision of the end picture...what you look and feel like when you are at the weight you want to be. If you focus on just that picture on a daily basis, the subconscious will gently control your animal nature and you won't need to fight or wrestle with yourself.
Pictures. It's all just pictures!
---------------------------------------------------------------
NEED MORE THAN A READING BUT LESS THAN COACHING?
This middle ground often arises out of having a reading. The session brings up an issue that the client wants to work on beyond the limits of a single reading session, yet they don't need full-blown coaching. I'm happy to do consulting with you for a limited number of sessions to work on a specific item. Several clients have had me help them with the visualization process that I have taught for years. In a couple sessions we can get real clarity on what is desired and then do a formal visualization process and turn the vision over to High Self. Other clients have wanted help in marketing their own company, or getting clarity on where they really want to go in a career change, or focus on defining what their next relationship will look like. Call me and we can design a program to fit your needs.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
HAPPY BIRTHDAY LIBRAS (LIBRANS?) (LIBRARIANS?)
To honor those of you born under the sign of Libra, and to help bring you some of that much-sought-after balance in your life, you may have a reading at HALF PRICE during the month of October.

MISCELLANEOUS REMINDERS

2. MYSTICAL MERRIMENT. With holidays coming, remember that I and my troupe do our thing for private and corporate parties. You can have one or more from the list of psychics, tarot readers, astrologers. Plan ahead. Christmas office parties are just around the corner.
3. GIFT CERTIFICATES are available for any of my services.
4. PAYMENT OPTIONS. I'm happy to accept payment plans for my services, so don't deny yourself. Let's talk.

1. On Staying Young While Growing Old
2. Clever Twist on Old Tool
3. "I'd Be Curious to Know..."
----------------------------------------------------------
ON STAYING YOUNG WHILE GROWING OLD
I've recently had two interesting experiences dealing with age. One was 'celebrating?' a significant birthday which made me feel old way before my time. The part of me that is counting is sure that I've made a horrible mistake. I see myself as about 40 and intend to keep thinking like that. I never was good in math!
The other experience was being at a social gathering with a group of people discussing their careers. One man calmly and sincerely said he saw himself trapped in his career as an engineer. He had gone to college for that career, got a degree, has a job in that career and will forever be locked into that career. I asked his age. Thirty! How awful to feel trapped in a career you don't like and to see no options for the future! I was proud to tell him of my employment history and that by his age I was on a second career and have had two more since then. I also proudly proclaimed that I hope I have a couple more before I turn in my lunch pail.
But here's the really interesting thing about the party. Of the seven or eight people involved in the discussion, I was stunned to hear at least three say they totally agreed with the fellow. They too were in careers they didn't like but that's just the way it is...something you have to put up with. But soon one man spoke up to say he had just left a long career and was beginning a new career with great enthusiasm. Two more in the group said they too either had changed or were thinking of changing careers.
So what made the difference in the viewpoint of these two types of people at the party? It wasn't until I got home that I realized....the ones who were excited about either a new career or the prospect of one were all people working with a coach. Me, for a couple of them! These people had a very different view of themselves and their potential which I assume they will have the rest of their lives. Of course, it begs the question: did they come to coaching with that attitude or gain it in coaching? I suspect the former but will accept the later.
My hope is that as more people begin to hear and learn more about the potential of coaching they too will see themselves as full of potential, not full of limitations. If you view yourself as trapped in a career, a relationship, a life-view, perhaps you owe it to yourself to investigate coaching as a tool to help you regain a fresh enthusiasm for your life and your potential. If 'old people' like me can feel it, so can you!
---------------------------------------------------------
A CLEVER AND CURIOUS TWIST ON AN OLD TOOL
I happened on this little tool by accident...if there are such things. You know how valuable I believe the simple Grape Cluster to be. But this is an interesting twist that may help you gain insight on a situation.
It happened when I was coaching a client who is in the process of adopting a baby. I first had the client and her husband each do a Grape Cluster on the idea of adopting a baby. They did one alone and then came together to compare the pictures in the cluster to see if they were on the same page about this process. They were! But somewhere in the discussion we began to talk about what the baby would want from them as parents. What if they could get inside the baby's head to know what it was looking for in parents? Suddenly I suggested they do a Grape Cluster from the baby's perspective. It gave them an entirely new way of seeing themselves as parents and brought up pictures and potentials they had not thought of before.
I suggest you try it in your own situations. If you're looking for a relationship and have done a cluster on what it would be like from your perspective, now reverse it and do a cluster on what someone else might want from you in a relationship. It's weird. The process can give you a very different way of looking at yourself and the situation. Try it if you're looking for a new job. What would the boss or company want YOU to look like and be like?
If you have an 'aha' moment or gain some valuable insight from this, I'd like to hear about it to share with readers.
--------------------------------------------------------
"I'D BE CURIOUS TO KNOW," SHE ASKED....
"What kind of things do you read," a client asked? "What do you think I read," I responded? "Oh, probably things on Tarot because I know you study it. And metaphysical things...psychic books."
Actually, not so. In fact, I almost never read that kind of book. I never read novels either. I was an English Lit major in college and vowed never again to have to read or analyze another novel!
There are two most important books in my life. About 1980 I read HOLY BLOOD, HOLY GRAIL, and it has changed my life and my view of life. It fell off the best seller list for a couple decades but, curiously enough, is back on the list in conjunction with the huge hit The DaVinci Code where it is mentioned. In fact, Holy Blood has spawned nearly all of the reading I have done since 1980 and I believe it should be required reading for all people. It presents a controversial history of Western thought that I have mostly adopted. If you're interested, go to Amazon.com or your local bookstore.
The second most important book I've ever read is very new and a logical outgrowth of Holy Blood. THE END OF FAITH by Harris again should be required reading, especially for Americans. While it is the most upsetting book I've ever read, it also is the most brutally honest at describing where the world is going and offering practical ways for us to change that. It offers an entirely new way of viewing governments and social orders. Difficult stuff...but certainly important if we plan on surviving. Again, check out Amazon.com or your bookstore.

"I will try to reconcile the bewildering juxtaposition of two facts: (1) our religious traditions attest to a range of spiritual experiences that are real and significant and entirely worthy of our investigation, both personally and scientifically; (2) many of the beliefs that have grown up around these experiences now threaten to destroy us.
We cannot live by reason alone. This is why no quantity of reason, applied as antiseptic, can compete with the balm of faith, once the terrors of this world begin to intrude upon our lives.... It is nowhere written, however, that human beings must be irrational, or live in a perpetual state of siege, to enjoy an abiding sense of the sacred. On the contrary, I hope to show that spirtuality can be---indeed, MUST be---deeply rational, even as it elucidates the limits of reason. Seeing this, we can begin to divest ourselves of many of the reasons we currently have to kill one another."

LIKE TAKING CANDY FROM A BABY
Well, actually, it's like GIVING candy to a baby.
Here's yet another tool to help you get what you want in life. It, as so many I mention here, is so simple I forget to even mention it. But as with so much in life...simple is good. Simple works. The reason for this, I believe, is that our subconscious ONLY understands simple things.
In the Huna system I have studied and practice, we imagine our subconscious as a child because that part of us understands and responds just as a child does. It does not understand complex theories, in depth analysis, or deep and penetrating thoughts. It only responds to pictures....or simple, child like practices.
One of the great tools I use with my coaching clients is visualizing their subconscious as a child. And one of the great ways of working with the child is to bargain with it. Once the client has decided what they want, presented it to the child in a picture form, then they work with the child to find any objections or negative feelings the child might have toward the picture of the future. And one of the best ways to get the child to give up a negative objection is to bargain with it. "What will you take to give up this fear or objection?"
It's fascinating to me what my child and my clients' children want for bargaining tools. Mine usually wants a week at the beach, which I typically argue down to a weekend at the beach. But one of my coaching clients, coach Mike Smith,(www.mikesmithcoaching.com) reminds me of just how simple and effective this bargaining can be. This guy gets away with murder, in my mind. His 'child' is the cheapest I've met! His child brings him all kinds of great things for his new business, new clients to work with, new opportunities to teach, new ideas for his own health and fitness, and much more. And what does the kid want in return? Chocolate! Good and expensive chocolate, to be sure, but nonetheless...
But here's the point. Mike used to be a competitive bodybuilder; has degrees in fitness and health; maintains a strenuous workout routine that makes me tired just hearing about it. For him to have candy is a BIG deal. I can go eat it any time I want (and do), so it would not be much of a reward. But for him and his 'child,' this treat is major.
The point here is to find out what that inner part of you wants as a reward for giving up its fears or objections. You can do it by learning about the visualization process I teach by going to my website and looking at Visualization, under Coaching Tools.
OR. You can just do it. Look ahead at a vision of something you want in your life. Get that picture clear in your mind. Then ask yourself what kind of reward would you like as a treat once you get there? Candy bar? Trip to the beach? New outfit? Trip around the world? Get clear what the answer is and then keep that picture clear as well as the picture of the goal you want. You might even get a real picture of the candy bar or beach scene to make it even more real.
In short...learn to make bargains with yourself in whatever fashion works for you. I doubt that Doctor Spock would approve of this, but I know it works. It worked with my real daughter..."I'll buy you an ice cream cone if you stop crying!"...and it works with the little kid that lives inside me now. "I'll spend a weekend playing at the beach if you do this for me!"
-------------------------------------------------------
MATCHMAKER, MATCHMAKER...MAKE ME A MATCH!
Against my better judgment and the advice of more than one person, I'm going to try this with no guarantees that it will really work. Bear with me folks. Work with me here....
I'm going to offer a new section on my website for matchmaking. And it will be FREE, at least for now as I see if it even works. Following is the WHY and the HOW.
Why? Because the one most popular question I get asked as a psychic, and the most common issue my coaching clients are dealing with is...drum roll...romance. Relationships. No surprise here. I have spent years and countless hours trying to help clients as well as myself to have a better romantic life. Some tools have worked to some degree some of the time. Others have never worked. There are huge psychological reasons and huge metaphysical reasons that we could discuss and analyze in perpetuity, explaining why we don't get the romance we want. But let's bypass all that and bottomline it. What works?
How? Here's the how part. The one tool I have seen work with dozens of clients is the Grape Cluster I speak about all the time. It works because it is so simple. It brings to consciousness, FROM the subconscious, simple pictures of what life will be like when we are in the relationship we most desire. And the 'inner child' or the subconscious ONLY understand pictures, not words, so this simple tool works well with that inner part of us.
But here's the really interesting thing. If you go to my website and read the example given under Coaching Tools, you will see a client's grape cluster that is very vivid and very simple. She met the man of her dreams in about two weeks after doing the cluster. On one of their early dates, she showed him her grape cluster and he said, "Oh, I would have recognized myself in this."
Bingo. What a great screening device! It has some of the qualities of these new Five Minute dating programs. You get five minutes to describe what you want and ask questions of the potential date to get clear answers on important issues. I think the cluster does the same thing. For example, if your cluster has pictures of having children playing in the yard and the reader does not want that picture, they move on. If your pictures don't resonate with the reader, so be it. But if they do, then there is a reason to pursue a meeting.
I think posting your simple grape cluster on my website might attract readers who are looking for a partner. It can't hurt, is my attitude. It's worth a try. The people you are exposing yourself to will primarily be clients of mine. At least there is a better chance that they have some metaphysical 'bent' to them, are possibly a bit more spiritually enlightened, or at least have a sense of humor.
Here's the system. If you want to post your cluster, go to the website and download the blank form, fill it in with WORD PICTURES and then mail it to me or scan it in and email it to me. Or, you can just send me written description of the individual 'grapes.' Remember, the whole point of a cluster is to do vivid PHOTOGRAPHABLE descriptions of what you want. Follow the model of the example given. I will then put the words in the actual grape cluster and post it on the site in a few days.
But caution. You will need to give your email address and NOT your street address or phone. If you are uncomfortable giving your email, you could go to Hotmail and get a free email account that would provide a bit more distance. But you are exposing yourself so keep that in mind and don't blame me!
When you send it to me, be sure to state one of the following: Female looking for Male; male looking for female; male looking for male; female looking for female; whatever other combinations there are.

LISTEN UP PORTLAND
Wednesday August 25 I'll be interviewed on OPB radio by Maggi White for her show Conversations with Maggi White. I never quite know what the interviewer will ask, but it is supposed to be about my practice, some of the Tarot and Huna tools I use, etc. If you're interested in hearing my dulcet tones, tune in at 11 Am on FM 91.5. ("dul*cet, adj.; pleasing to the ear; pleasing or agreeable." Webster's.)

SEE? I TOLD YOU THIS STUFF WORKS!
Client Testimonial
"I wanted to let you know that I'm doing quite well. The ADD diagnosis and resulting Strateria have helped me to focus, calm down and be able to spend quality time working on projects. I used to get so overwhelmed thinking about all I had to do just to get through the day. Now as I look back over the past few months, I've really been able to streamline my daily life and actually do some things I enjoy doing around the house. The house also looks great!
Obviously I have more work to do. I should do a grape cluster on the money issues. I might even do one on men someday! I've done a cluster on the other two issues in my life and both have progressed tremendously. Thanks for getting me started on this journey!"

"The good of today is based upon the good of yesterday. That is why we should constantly be attentive to our actions.
Take frugal people as an example. They recycle the scraps from their cooking into compost piles. They eat at home rather than in restaurants. They do not waste water. They shop carefully. They do not spend their money on frivolities. This is exactly the type of care that we need for spirituality.
Whether our lives are magnificent or wretched depends upon our ordering of daily details. We must organize the details into a composition that pleases us. Only then will we have meaning in our lives."

PLAYING OLD TAPES
Aha...You thought I was going to write about your subconscious patterns. I've written enough about that. This is about real tapes...those plastic tapes you get when I do a reading for you. I want to suggest you dig them out and replay them. (You did save them in a sacred place, didn't you?)
Case in Point:
Over a year ago a woman came for her first reading and I expounded on all the changes coming her way. New career. New location. New health.
I thought she liked the reading.
She returned recently to say that she had originally thought I was from the moon. I was her first, and last, psychic reader. Nothing I said made any sense to her or described what she wanted in her life. She frankly tossed the information aside, BUT NOT THE TAPE! She came across the tape when she was....drum roll...packing to move to Southern California, just as I had predicted. She sat down and listened to the tape and was startled to find all the predictions had come to pass.
Of course now she is sitting in my office only hours before she leaves and needing an 'emergency psychic reading.' Funny how true believers are born....
-------------------------------------------------
ASK THE PSYCHIC COACH:
"Okay, here we go...!! I am a single parent working on "getting my health back" so to speak, in order to get on with life. I have been counseled that in order to be effective at all, I will need to resolve some health issues first! This is my first goal. Although my calling/career has not been found yet, I do have to make a living! Here's the problem: Oregon is where I came to be with kind friends. I have a very difficult time here with the dark, damp, moldy winters (sorry!). My heart is probably still in the Southwest - CO, NM etc., where I long to return. Surroundings/environment etc. have a strong impact on me. I've always been exceptionally sensitive to the energy and aesthetic "style" of my natural surroundings. Should I start finding clients (cleaning houses, childcare etc.), finding my own place (I'm staying with friends) and generally establishing myself.... Or, should I make much more temporary plans while trying "by hook or by crook" to get to a "place" (the all-important word/feeling for me!!!) I want to be. In other words, should I just get there - and start making a life, or should I accept where I am for NOW, be thankful, and begin furthering myself in the present, although it feels like a chain. My motivation sags when I don't have a time-table. I feel indecisive and weak. What's wrong with my willpower? Sometimes I just want to run for the Rockies! Is this so wrong? Would I be putting myself on a limb without the love and support I've encountered here? (This is getting a little claustrophobic, but I'm scared to have no one at all.) Help! And Thanks."
Dear Climatically Challenged:
God I hate it when this happens. I have very good, reasoned, even Fatherly advice to give. Then I do a reading and get very different information. What to do...but give both pieces of advice and let you decide!
My left brain advice would be to seriously consider 'going home' to the area you love. I am a big believer in the power of place. We can do the same amount of effort in one place and feel as though we're swimming up stream, yet we do the same thing elsewhere and we're going with the flow. I lived for 102 miserable years in Salt Lake City where it felt as though I worked and lived under water and simply living and breathing took extra energy. Moving home to Oregon and life's a breeze.
HOWEVER. When I go into my mental 'workshop' and watch you, immediately I'm faced with the words 'STAY, STAY, STAY.'
I don't believe you are healthy or strong enough yet. The nurturing you are getting from friends here is more helpful than you suckling on the Tetons in the Rocky Mountains! Stay here for a few more months of strength building and then reconsider the return home next year.
And remember. You're not the only one who hates our damp winters! It took me years to accept them. Remember there is the Gorge and Central Oregon which is a desert. Sixty minutes east of Portland and you can see sunshine and feel the dry air. Why do you suppose they put a freeway up the gorge??

ON THE WEBSITE
I'm shameless at trying to get readers to go to my website. Some of the rewards of going there are:
1. Coaching Tools. You can read about, download, and practice several tools I use with my coaching clients, and they're all free. Grape clusters are there, along with the powerful 'cube' exercise and information on visualization.
2. Archives are there for past articles and past Psychic Phlashes, my email newsletter.
3. Audio. On my website there are now two buttons to click and hear me describe coaching and readings. Great place to send friends who haven't heard the charm of my voice.
4. Subscription to Psychic Phlashes is there and you can send it to friends suggesting they subscribe.

PSYCHIC SPECIAL
This is a blatant attempt to get you, my devoted readers, to do what you're best at...promoting me. Anyone in my position as a self-employed psychic relies primarily on referrals to gain new clients. Here's your opportunity to help encourage someone to have a reading who might be hesitant.
Through August, if you buy one reading you can get a second at half price for anyone who is not on my mailing list as a client. Either pay for both at the time of your reading or give me the name of the person who will be calling for a half price reading.

NAKED PSYCHIC READING
No, no silly... I wasn't naked, although that does bring up some interesting visuals and leaves me spread wide open for puns about the psychic and Crystal Balls. My CLIENT was naked. It was a first, as far as I am aware. If you want to read more, skip to the bottom of the Ezine. But be warned: there is a picture with Full Male Nudity, so if that offends you, TURN BACK NOW!

INTERVIEW WITH AN ASTROLOGER
Diana Stone has been a friend and mentor for God-knows how long. 25 years? Can it be? I asked her the following interview questions as a way of helping my readers get a better...more realistic...understanding of what astrology can do for them. I highly recommend you go to Diana's website and also ask to subscribe to her very readable Ezine. www.dianastone.com
1. How...even, Why...did you become an astrologer? Why would an otherwise apparently reasonable woman spend her adult life on this?
Diana:
If I am answering these questions for skeptics, let me say this. Are you
a true skeptic or so closed minded that you won't change your mind even
though you don't know anything about astrology and I have studied and
practiced it for 35 years? Your question about why a reasonable person
would spend her life on astrology assumes that astrology is not
reasonable. I am a skeptic but I investigate something before I dismiss
it out of hand just because the general populace may poo-poo it.
2. I, of course, am a True Believer, but for the two or three skeptical readers, can you very briefly explain how the position of stars and planets at the time of my birth could have any real effect on me or my personality. Could there not be other influences that cause the traits, such as the season at conception or even latitude on the planet?
Diana:
Astrologers do not believe that the position of the planets causes
anything; we are not dealing with a cause and effect relationship. You
must understand the concept of synchronicity before you begin to
understand the true meaning of astrology. Certain things occur together.
Of course other factors mold personality.
3. Frankly, the most important information I have gotten from astrology is not on predicting my future so much as explaining why I act and feel the way I do. Knowing my sun sign was a real eye-opener for me. But there is much more to it than just the sun sign. Can you explain the importance of rising sign, for example?
Diana:
The emphasis on prediction comes largely from the media, not
astrologers. Prediction is one of the most misunderstood myths about
astrology. Branches of astrology that predict the weather, elections
etc. are generally more accurate than predicting the future for
individuals. However, I remind you that no one rolls his or her eyes
when the weatherman predicts. You smoke three packs a day, eat junk and
get no exercise and the doctor says you are a dead man? Economists
predict the markets. Astrologers have their own system but we need a
case history and information about your life. However, as you say,
prediction is not the point. It is understanding WHY things are
happening the way they do for you.
First, your horoscope is calculated from the date, place and exact time
of birth. The Sun, Moon, the planets and the 12 signs of the zodiac are
all somewhere in every person's chart. Each symbol is an archetype that
expresses in some area of life. The rising sign is calculated from the
birth TIME and gives information about your early formative years. This
material is generally a component then of subconscious patterns that
project onto specific areas of adult life in various ways. You do
understand that answering these questions is trying to explain nuclear
physics in 20 words or less.
4. Is it important for people to actually study astrology, or just go to one? I see the same problem for astrology as I see in the Tarot. People can get a little knowledge of the subject and then go around the neighborhood terrifying people by doing 'readings.' How much study is needed to do readings for self or others?
Diana:
There is no reason for people to study astrology unless they want to
practice it. People don't study the law or medicine; they go to the
people who have. Astrology is a profession and it takes as long to learn
it as any other. Four years for a B.A. so to speak. Kepler College in
Seattle is an accredited college in Washington State and this year is
the first graduating class with a four-year B.A. degree.
5. Where can readers get good astrological advice....and include yourself in the answer! Books? Classes? Internet 'readings?' Other astrologers?
Diana:
If you want professional astrological services, you go to a competent
professional astrologer. If you need a criminal lawyer, are you going to
go read a book?
6. I know the answer to this question, having heard your extremely snotty answer a number of times, but my readers could benefit if you would share your hateful opinion one more time: How do you feel about newspaper astrology columns?
Diana:
About Sun sign columns? They are for entertainment...like Dick Tracy
(anyone remember him?) Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. There
is no relationship to professional astrology and newspaper astrology.
I leave you with this thought. Astrology has been around for thousands
of years. It is the REAL oldest profession.

ASK THE PSYCHIC COACH:
Hi Don,
I have a challenging question for you. It deals with financial lack.
I wanted to schedule an appointment with you for some time but haven't had the cash! Anyway, I've had an appointment with you when I lived in Portland about 5 or 6 years ago. I was suffering from depression. I was a computer programmer and made lots of money but obviously didn't know how to manage it well and took the computer business for granted so I lost it. In the last few years, I've been trying to get a computer job or at least know what other career I can do with no results whatsoever. I am now experiencing financial lack and feel trapped and stuck. I don't understand why I don't know yet what to do or at least get a high paying computer job. It's like I feel stuck in the middle. I can't find a computer job and I don't know what else to do.
I hope you can help.
Dear Programmer:
(First, as an aside to you and other readers, don't deny yourself a reading because of money. I don't reduce my charge or do sliding scale and I expect to be paid for my services, but when and how I get paid is very negotiable. Clients often write several checks for weeks in advance, or one client paid $10 a month faithfully. Whatever works for you.)
When I watch you in my 'workshop,' you come in looking excited and child-like. I think you either just got a job or will in a matter of days. It seems to be a part time job in computers again, and I keep seeing a bank involved. Perhaps there is an opening at a major national bank. Start looking!
But the main issue I see is that when you get this job, you need be clear that it's only a stop-gap measure until your new career comes along. You do NOT want to see this as a long term job. I suggest you go to my website and use some of the tools under Coaching Tools to help you determine what that next career is going to be.
I asked the Tarot what the near future holds for you and work and I drew the Sun card, which is the healing card. It shows two naked kids dancing in the sun, much as my sense of you is in my workshop. This is fresh start, rejuvenation, healing.
I also ask the cards what concept would most help you find your new career and I drew the Emperor, which is the voice of reason. It suggests you use very rational processes to find that career, such as those found on my website. "DO" something. Try to be detached, rational, reasonable, and steady in your search.
And finally, I have to ask. Are you sure you're over the depression? I'm not convinced...
-------------------------------------------------------
GOLIATH WAS AN EASY MARK
Here's an interesting twist on an old fable. Most of the time when we hear the story, we marvel that David was so accurate he was able to bring down the giant. But wait. There's another interpretation. Goliath, being huge, was an easy target to hit!
So how can this relate to our lives?
Case in point: I recently counseled with a man whose problems were so large, so numerous, so overwhelming...so gigantic, in other words...that he frankly couldn't even see the problem. The real problem was his untreated alcoholism. It was so pervasive in so many areas of his life and work that he didn't even see it as the problem. When he did recognize the real issue, however, he was able to bring it down with one swift hit. When he overcame his alcoholism, all those problems that seemed so huge turned out to be gone.
Perhaps we should be glad when we have a gigantic problem. It's easier to hit and destroy!
-------------------------------------------------
NO POLITICS, PLEASE!
This is not the forum to address politically charged topics in this important election year. But my mouth is chronically bloody from biting my tongue, so to relieve some political pressure, I have started a Yahoo group for bleeding heart liberals to have a forum to express themselves. My intention is to have a forum based on coaching principles, more or less. That is, instead of just whining, here is a place to make suggestions on action that will move our cause forward. The group will be moderated, meaning I have to approve messages. I do that not to stifle comments but to keep the messages on topic, not just a dozen people responding to say they liked what the last person wrote. If you're interested, you will need to first register with Yahoo which seems like a more complex process than it really is! Once registered you never have to again. And once in the group, you can share your suggestions with the entire group with a single email. Just go to: Liberals in Action
Once you're there, check the old messages. My first message will be:
Why would a bleeding heart liberal even consider voting for George W?
-----------------------------------------------------------
NAKED PSYCHIC READING CONTINUED....
Doing medical readings is one of my favorite areas, but not when it comes to little tykes like this one who had two difficult chronic issues and deserved neither. After a couple long distance readings on his medical conditions, at last report he is much better and we all hope it is permanent. Let's all visualize him splashing wildly with his rubber ducky in the tub!

WORLD'S MOST POWERFUL TOOL DISCOVERED
It's true, and I'm not exaggerating. I have just discovered a tool that you can use that will bring you whatever it is you are working toward. Over several years of coaching dozens of clients, including many dozens with ADD, I have found the secret that will release you from feeling stuck, that will bring order and sanity to your home, work, and life. And the best part is it's FREE; takes no additional training or study; is already in your home and office; does not talk back; offers no resistance; requires no assembly; takes almost no time.
I promise that if you use this tool, you will soon arrive at whatever goals you have set for yourself. If you use this tool properly, you can stop paying your coach, time manager, office assistant, trainer, and the like. If you use this tool you will be the envy of your neighborhood and social circle because they will watch you attain all that you want. You could even become a coach with this tool and go around charging money to demonstrate the tool.
At this point you are as breathless over this as I am, so I want you to relax a bit before going on. Read the rest of this Ezine, take deep breaths, and then finish this article at the end.

ASK THE PSYCHIC COACH
(If you would like a free mini reading here, send your request to me with Ask the Psychic Coach in the subject line.)
Dear Psychic Coach--
I have a number of nervous habits that persist even after almost two years of meditating regularly, and even though my life has become very satisfying, about as close to perfect as it could be. Can you tell what is going on with me?
Dear Nervous,
When I watch you in my imaginary 'workshop,' two issues come up. First you come in very 'hyped up.' My sense is that you're over stimulated by something, and my guess would be from what you are eating. I asked the Tarot what is the cause of your nervous habits and drew the Hermit card, which rules diet and nutrition. If I were you, I'd review what you eat that might be causing over stimulation. You may need to get food sensitivity testing at some point.
The second issue that comes up is the theory of 'replacement' or substitution. You mention you have been meditating on the problem for two years. Too long! No time now for more reflection on the problem but now is the time to take action. I suggest that when you find yourself doing any of the habits, you quickly and consciously substitute a different, pleasurable activity to over rule the habit. Please don't do what one client did years ago. He had several nasty habits and every time he found himself biting his fingernails, he had to ride his stationary bike one more mile. Poor guy was worn to a frazzle! The problem here is that he took a nasty habit and brow beat himself into submission with a punishment. Don't be a task master which only substitutes one bad feeling for another. Instead, go just the opposite direction. Decide in advance what nice thing you'll do any time you find yourself biting your nails, or whatever your habit is. "Kill" the habit with kindness, in other word.
----------------------------------------------------
REMEMBER HOW MUCH I LIKE TO TALK
Last month I spoke before a Mensa group of about 80 Smarty Pants and also a group in a private home of about 25 people involved with Noetic Science. Contrary to rumors about Virgos, I can be quite entertaining. I'm happy to talk about being psychic, how I think it works, how I got this way, or I often talk about the Tarot and why an apparently sane man would spend his adult life studying it, how you can use it in your life, where it came from, etc, etc. No charge for me to speak to your group, and I love the challenge of speaking to skeptics.
----------------------------------------------------
A FAVOR
I'm in the final process of refining my book proposal, working title YOUR INNER COACH, and will soon be looking for an agent or publisher. If you know someone who is interested in yet another self-help book, please let me know. You will get a free, autographed copy.
------------------------------------------------------------
END OF THE SUSPENSE!
Now do not scoff...sneer...turn away. I'm not being facetious here. Well, not any more at least. Only recently have I discovered, quite by accident, that the one tool most of my coaching clients do NOT use is....A LIST. When they do use this simplest of tools, THEY PROGRESS LIKE MAGIC.
I mistakenly assumed everyone has The List on their desk. I look out through my Double Virgo eyes and assume all people are anal-retentive. (Yes, it does have a hyphen.) I thought everyone organized their day, week, life according to the written list. Had I known this wasn't true, I could have saved lots of time and money studying coaching and just taught this tool, because I truly believe this is the most important and effective tool in coaching.
I once had an ADD coaching client who worked each day trying to GET RID OF his list. He thought it was somehow a crutch to be overcome, the way many men feel about medication of any kind. He thought it was a sign of weakness that he 'needed' a list. I think he changed his mind when I told him even this Double Virgo relied on a list!
How to make a list. It sounds simple, but there are many ways to make them so let's talk about it a bit. Following are some 'rules' I'll suggest:
1. Make it portable, so it goes with you to the office, home desk, etc.
2. Make it simple. I use a yellow legal pad. Color is nice to separate it from other less important paper.
3. Put it where you will actually see it often: desk, kitchen counter, night stand.
4. Write in PENCIL. This way you can't make a mistake! Things change...
5. Make up a code that works for you....some way on the left margin to highlight what needs immediate attention, what can wait, etc.
6. Gleefully cross things out when they're done!
Here is what is on my list as we speak. I wear my heart on my sleeve, so why not my list?
The top 2/3 of my page are more immediate issues;
Tues: write Psychic Phlashes
Tues: meditate on Magician card
Wed: find Golden Bowls of Compassion CD. Online? New Renaissance? Call first.
Wed: measure two walls for mirrors
Wed: do new business visualization
Wed: revise Overview of book proposal in hopes SOMEONE understands it
Thurs: library for info on writing monologues
The bottom third of my page is for long term issues:
Start a Yahoo group for terrified political liberals? Make it a How To group of action.
Outline Tarot DVD ideas
Decide trip dates to Washington
Look into more coach training. CTI? Yet another book? Which?
As a corollary to this kind of list, I think one of the most effective coaching tools, especially for ADD clients, is the morning Check In. You might try it yourself in a modified form. I ask my clients to sit at the computer for just a minute or two and organize their day in an email to me. Several have a sticky note on their computer with five or six areas of their life they want to be reminded of daily, so they don't 'forget' something, especially those 'somethings' they didn't want to remember in the first place! Their sticky note might just list these items:
exercise
business marketing plan
get a date!
book proposal
declutter house
The Check In will include what they intend to do today in each of those areas. It's a simple way to organize your thoughts at the beginning of the day, thus 'setting your intention.' You may not do all you intended, and things may come up that detour you, but for the most part you will accomplish what you set out to do and at the end of the day you will have a sense of accomplish in all the areas of your life that are shown in the sticky note.
Let me know if you have great success with this incredible tool so I can report back here!

WISDOM FOUND IN REESE'S PEANUTBUTTER CUPS
...film at 11:00...
Get it where you can, I say. I'm referring of course to insights, wisdom, knowledge.
I have often written about our need to dialogue with and learn from our subconscious, called Lowself in Hawaiian Huna system. It takes up the majority of our time and effort, or should. I have also written much more briefly about turning over our visions for the future to our spirit selves, or in Huna Highself. This is the illusive spiritual part of us that is connected to the "Other," or whatever you want to call God, Life Force, etc.
What I have not written about is what Huna calls Middle Self. There is a good reason why I avoid talking much about Middle Self. I don't want to hear about it! If we accept the Huna division of self, Lowself represents the subconscious with all its mixed messages, bad patterns, etc. If we accept that Highself is our spiritual self, there is not much dialoguing we need to do with it. What do I have to teach that part of me! In this model then, Middle Self is our conscious, rational here-and-now mind. It's the part of me that makes moment by moment and day by day decisions. Its data often comes from the subconscious and may be influenced by the spirit self, but at the end of the day, Middle self decides what 'we,' the three selves, do each moment of the day.
Well, rats! This sounds uncomfortably like RESPONSIBILITY. Who wants to hear about that? I would much rather blame my parents for my bad manners, failures and hideous psychological patterns. I would much rather turn problems over to Highself and then sit back daily doing a minute or two of casual visualization to push Highself to fix the problem. I want to live in a world where magic takes care of me.
"Oh, what good it does the heart to know it isn't magic." (From the poem Stanley Kunitz, by Mary Oliver) Much as we may wish it were magic that runs our lives, we should be very thankful that it doesn't because then we would be at the mercy of yet another outside, random, and unreliable force. The magic we may be looking for comes about through the ACTIONS we take. Or don't take. There may be magic forces acting upon us, but if we don't get our Middle self taking actions, nothing happens. This is why I believe coaching can be so effective for many people. It focuses on what can be DONE to bring about magical changes. And this is where coaching fails many people. They are unwilling to gird their loins and simply DO the actions that magic has brought before them. I believe we call this Courage....
And what in heck does this have to do with Reese's Peanut Butter Cups? For years I had a 90 minute drive from the city to my home in the Columbia River Gorge. I regularly stopped at a truck stop for gas and often bought, for a mere dollar, Reese's cups. Three large cups in one long package. Just what the recovering alcoholic turned sugar addict didn't need! The last time I did this, I left my office in the city knowing I would stop there and get gas and knowing I would buy the candy. I could taste it all the way there. When I left the gas station, I ate all three gooey candies and savored them all. But when I was done, 'conveniently,' as the Church Lady used to say on Saturday Night Live, I began to berate Lowself for "doing this to me again! You always make me eat sugar just like you forced me to drink alcohol. You are out of control!"
As Lowself, this child like part of me, often does, in my imagination he raised his little hand as if to get attention from a teacher, and he politely said, "Excuse me. I had nothing to do with this. You consciously knew all day you would stop and buy this candy. You knew you would eat all three within minutes. You can't blame me for everything that you don't want to take responsibility for. You can't call it 'subconscious' when you plan it all day!'"
Smart alecky little bastard....

LETTERS...WE GET LETTERS
Attention, Attention Deficit Disorder Sufferers!
Three months ago a good friend of mine told me about Don
Clarkson. Being at the end of my rope and having read the story of Donnie, I decided to contact him. After several conversations, he told me he suspected I had ADD and would I mind taking a free test on line (www.amenclinic.com)? To my amazement all my puzzle pieces came together as I went through all points of the test. The results came out that it was highly probable that I had ADD in three areas, probable in two areas and not probable in one area.
At this same time I had been going to a doctor to lower my blood pressure. Every time I tried a new medicine I would get a physical reaction and have to stop the medicine. Knowing this, I was really hesitant to go on any medication for ADD. Luckily a co-worker told me about a doctor who uses natural supplements. With reluctance I went to this doctor, had a thorough exam, shared my ADD test results and described my situation. I was put on a supplement regiment for three months and went on a low carb diet.
After taking the first dose, I noticed my brain stopped "racing". There was also a big correlation between eating sugar and feeling depressed. My doctor also gave me literature on each of the medicines to help me understand the role they played in balancing the natural chemicals in the brain. I was totally amazed. My thinking slowed down, my emotions were calm. I also lost 20 pounds. I was seeing the real me.I had always thought I was a little crazy, but I'm not. I must be above average to have compensated for this all these years.
I still have trouble with memory and typing letters in the right order. I'll always be writing lists to help me keep my focus. But I am so grateful to feel normal, mentally and emotionally. I'm off of the rollercoaster I have been on for so many years.I have another month to go to be on the supplement regiment and then I'll see how much I need to take to maintain normalcy. Now I can say: my puzzle pieces have a name ADD and I'm feeling better each day.
Sincerely,
"K"

ASK THE PSYCHIC COACH
(If you have a question for the psychic coach, email it to me with Psychic Coach in the subject line.)
Hello Don,
Here's my story...
For the past couple of years, my ability to actualize and move forward on projects and life paths seems stalled. I am normally quite "manifestive" and only have trouble being disciplined when not fully "into" something.
This situation seems different...more like something is blocking my progress. I am motivated to eat better, exercise more, and complete projects of sharing healing techniques and energy work with those in need. I have SUCH resolve and commitment one day, then "fall down" the next, continuing this process day after day, month after month. It is as though my "will power" is suppressed. I have asked my subconscious for clues as to what is holding me back, but am not getting clear messages. I sometimes try to blame my partner for having no discipline and "sucking" me into his bad habits, but I know that this kind of victim consciousness ultimately doesn't fly and that I am responsible for my own choices and actions. I even wonder if we, as a couple, have some past life contract working itself out in a negative way. I have also explored the thought that I am bucking some "flow" and that my life is headed in other directions, leaving old paths behind, however, even if this is true, I want to go down that path with a healthy body and clear mind. Sign me "Stuck"
Psychic Coach Responds:
Dear 'Stuck,'
It must be partly spring fever because you are certainly not alone in feeling stuck.
Let me describe the picture that comes up when I go into my imaginary 'workshop' to ask about your situation. I'm suddenly at a horse race! Not part of my past so I know it must have meaning for you.
I imagine a horse all fired up at the starting gate that then, before even reaching the first turn, begins to get a clear understanding of the race. "I've been here before. I know where this is going." Suddenly his resolve and fire dissipate and he comes in last.
I think your lack of resolve has to do with your work. You should think about raising your work to a much higher level, whatever that may mean for you and for your type of work. There is a part of you that can get fired up about work, but it doesn't last because, as with the race horse, there is a deeper knowledge that this work, while it occupies time and appears to be going somewhere, really isn't. A race track does imply forward motion, but in the end comes back to the beginning having really gone nowhere. I would be meditating, visualizing, doing grape clusters and cubes or whatever other methods you know to get a clearer picture of where your work should be going.
I ask the Tarot what card would most help you get unstuck, and I draw the Hermit, which is called "attaining the knowledge of your heart's desire.' It shows an old man on top of a mountain holding a lantern. It implies to me that you are not there yet. You need to attain the knowledge of your heart's desire. You are only part way up your career mountain and need to go clear to the top where you will find a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment. You, as the Hermit, will also be holding a light for others on their path. This is the teacher card, so there may be some message for you in that aspect of the card.

MANIFESTATION WORKSHOP
Back by popular demand. I offered this day long workshop for years and have recently had several attendees say they would like to take it again, so I will offer it to them as well as new visualizers.
The workshop uses ancient Hawaiian Huna visualization techniques along with all the Tarot secrets I can slip in to teach students how to first determine what they want in their lives and then how to overcome the subconscious issues that keep them from getting what they want.
Coaching clients may want to take this one day training to save spreading the information out over several weeks of coaching.
Date: June 12
Time 10AM-4 or 5 PM Sack lunch.
Cost: $145
Cost for current coaching clients: $120
Place: My home near Portland State Univ.

HOUSEBOAT FOR RENT AT THE COAST
I decided to keep my houseboat and move it to the Oregon coast at Newport so I have a 'place at the beach.' It makes a cozy hideaway for writers and lovers. (I'm one of the above.) The marina has a pool, hot tubs, sauna, plus dock for crabbing and fishing. The boat sleeps 6, but only 2 comfortably! It has full kitchen (alright, galley), bath, TV with vcr. Plus, there is the ambiance of a working fishing harbor with salty characters, Oregon Aquarium, Marine Science Center, to say nothing of sandy beaches nearby. Rent for now is just $40 per night. IN THIS ISSUE:
VOICE FROM THE BEYOND! Me speaking on coaching.
MAYBE YOU'RE A COACH ALREADY. Some characteristics of people, possibly like you, who are becoming coaches.
TALKING IS NOT ENOUGH. Guest article about the difference in talking and taking action on subconscious issues.
DEAR ABBY? Not quite but sort of. Free advice.
---------------------------------------------------------
VOICE FROM THE BEYOND
Here is another high-tech audio for you to play with. I offer it here even though it was designed for my website to introduce listeners to the coaching process. Even if you know all about coaching, you may want to forward this explanation to someone you know who wants/needs to know more about it. In a few days you can go to the website and listen to it anytime you feel the need.
Be sure your computer speakers are on then click below:
http://PlayAudio-123.com/play.asp?m=68597&f=YDMGWO&ps=13&p=1
-----------------------------------------------------
MAYBE YOU ARE A COACH ALREADY and don't even know it?
I have several times been referred to as "the coaches' coach" because I always have about a dozen coaching clients moving into this new industry. Many come from coaching schools across the country who have heard that I work with the psychic process and help them work with their own subconscious issues. But a large number of the clients I have who are coaches came to work with me not knowing they were embryonic coaches themselves.
Perhaps it is the times we live in, with high unemployment, but there seems to be large numbers of people out there looking for a new career. Many have no career at all while others have one and hate it. These people are often drawn to a coach to help them move into a new career and what has surprised me is the numbers who have decided becoming a coach is what they were looking for all along! And the other surprising fact is that of the dozens of coaches I have coached, no two are in competition with each other for clients. The coaching career is so broad that it can accommodate wide ranging interests and clients. I work with coaches specializing in weight loss; writing; public speaking; hospital administration; nutrition; new-age business development; real estate development; health; publishing; government efficiency (let us all visualize him a huge success!).
If you are dissatisfied with your current work situation, you might take a look back at what you have done and what you would like to be doing. Some of the common, but certainly not required, themes that have come up with these new coaches are: A. They often have dealt with people in a listening or advice format, such as therapist, teacher, etc. B. They have an inner desire to help people move forward. C. They have a skill or passion they want to pass on to others to enrich both their lives. D. They often have a burning desire to 'do something' but don't see a context in which to work.
If any of these feelings describe you, perhaps we should talk. I'm happy to discuss how coaching as a career might be just the context for what you have to offer the world. I can be very forthcoming for the price of a cheap lunch. Try me...
-------------------------------------------------------------
JUST TALKING ABOUT IT ISN'T ENOUGH!
(Following is a portion of an article Diana Stone, my astrologer and mentor, had in her recent Ezine. I reprint it here with her permission because I think it speaks well to the coaching and psychic process and actually explains why I took up coaching in the first place. Having the psychic...or whomever...reveal a pattern does NOT change it. Action must be taken or you will sink back into your 'default position.' Diana's recommendation at the end is to perhaps see a therapist, which of course is good advice, but even that may result in more 'talking about' the issue rather than taking action to change it. Perhaps seeing a therapist and a coach is in order!)
What concerns me the most is the tendency for clients to fluff off the patterns I have discussed with them until disaster strikes. Then they are willing to do most anything to get themselves out of a big mess. The problem is they should have done the inner work a long time before that. It behooves all of us to learn the tools necessary to work through problems. Otherwise it is a roll of the dice as to how hard the hammer will come down now at the 11th hour.
One reason for this problem is that clients equate understanding the pattern with actually working through it.
Those are two profoundly different dynamics. Once a pattern entrenches itself in the subconscious--usually in childhood--this translates into a set of behaviors that serve the furtherance of the inner reality. It is not easy learning to recognize how we actually act out a pattern that is leading to an outcome that we most certainly do not want. That is why it is so critically important now to identify those early patterns and strategize ways to alter habitual responses.
Clients have amazing ways of rationalizing away the truth of their situation. What it boils down to is this, are you up against a set of circumstances (especially career and money problems) that just keep dogging your heels no matter what you try to do? It doesn't make any difference what you say to explain it, is it there? Then you have some work to do. Do it now before it reaches disastrous proportions or wastes any more of your life in this struggle. Work with someone who can come from an objective perspective. As an astrologer, I dissect the problem and lay it all out for you. From there on you may want to work with a therapist. You must identify the thinking and decision making that is driven by the subconscious.
---------------------------------------------------------
DEAR ABBY? NO...DEAR PSYCHIC COACH
Here is a new feature I wanted to add to Psychic Phlashes....a Dear Abby type column but with a twist. This will be more like Dear Psychic Coach. I know you all like to read stories about my psychic and coaching clients, so here is a chance to be part of those stories and get a free mini reading along with some free coaching advice. The point of the column is not to just do a 'reading' on the situation but to offer some concrete advice that might actually help the situation. We call that Coaching!
If you have an issue, send it to me with Dear Psychic Coach in the subject line. Be aware that I will have the right to publish your question and my advice in this column, without mentioning your name of course. If you are afraid your story would reveal you, please think twice about sending it in. (Bad example: Dear Psychic Coach: I recently started a war in a couple little countries far, far away. Even my best friends are tattling on me now. How can I get out of this mess and still keep the oil I found there? Signed: Yankee Doodle) I will only respond to questions in Psychic Phlashes so please don't sit by the computer waiting for a reply!
Dear Coach,
I have been sick for months with a mystery illness. I'm only 23 years old but feel like I'm 100. I have been to four medical doctors, two naturopaths, spent over two weeks in the local university hospital but no one can find what's wrong or how to cure me. I don't even believe in the psychic thing so the fact that I'm writing you should explain how desperate I am. Can you help?
Feeling Hopeless
Dear Hopeless,
Here is the scene that I see when I go into my imaginary 'workshop' in my head. I see you in a garage or outbuilding mixing chemicals in a bucket. Then I see you on a hillside spraying weeds with this chemical.
In short: I think you are toxic. You have some hideous chemical in your system and it can't get out, and here's the curious part. You don't sweat! There is some heating mechanism in your system that is broken or the dial turned way down. I think this chemical is in your tissue and not being eliminated by sweating.
I would suggest you get a hair analysis done to see what chemicals are in your body. Your naturopath will probably know how to do this and where to send your hair. God knows I don't understand the process, but this technique can show what chemicals have been stored in your body. It's apparently similar to counting rings on a tree or analyzing sediment layers! Once you know, then you can work with the naturopath to do a detoxing or even a chelation, which is similar. Part of your therapy I think will be you sitting in a sauna or steam room for many minutes to force this chemical to come out of your flesh.
Know that there is a cause for this and a cure, so don't give up but get angry or fired up to find the answer!
-------------------------------------------------------------

SERIOUS MONKEY BUSINESS
For decades I have watched clients do the oddest things in the face of rejection. Someone gets dumped by their romantic partner, or gets fired by the boss, and instead of moving away from them and on to a new situation, they return to the same person with even renewed intensity. Why would humans do such a thing? When you get kicked in the teeth by someone, why would you think of going back? Being spiritually and emotionally evolved, I of course don't do this. Anymore. Ok...not for 6 years. Alright, at least I'm still working on it. And I think I may have run across a very simple explanation for this bizarre behavior.
Several months ago I read the review of an obscure book in Scientific American that described a series of tests done on monkeys. (Don't call PETA. It was in the 1940s.) A young monkey was removed from its mother and placed alone in a cage with a wire monkey covered with something like fur. The infant learned to cling to this surrogate mother for comfort when frightened. Then in the name of science, the scientist would shoot a big blast of air from a nozzle inside the wire frame and terrify the monkey so that it ran across the cage. But then the monkey came back to the wire mother and clung even harder. This is what intrigued the scientists.
The explanation they came up with is that while the experiment raised the infant's fear factor so that it ran away, at the same time it also raised the monkey's security needs, thus overpowering the fear factor with an even greater need for protection. The monkey runs back to "Mom" because it needs Mom even more now! Sound familiar?
We've all done it, I'm sure. But my greater concern is that we are also doing it on a subconscious level and don't even know it. How else do I explain why I repeatedly chose alcoholic relationships even though I was raised by alcoholics and should run from them? Why does the woman who was called "Stupid" by her boss in front of other employees get hired by not one but two more bosses who do exactly the same thing?
Solution? Illusive, to be sure. Perhaps the best thing we can do is acknowledge consciously that when we get rejected we will have heightened security needs that must be met....but NOT by the one who rejected us! Maybe we really do need to run home to Mom for a little comforting. Or go to a good friend to be held. Or go get a massage at least! If we get the underlying need satisfied elsewhere, perhaps we will break the cycle of running back to our own wire monkey, whatever form it takes in our life.

ONLY A VIRGO COULD EVEN CARE....!
Following is an article I wrote for my long-time friend Diana Stone's newsletter. (www.dianastone.com) She has expressed the metaphysical need for improving our language skills and invited me to comment from my perspective as a lover of Tarot.
Dear Diana,
Your singular effort to instruct humanity in the right use of language has touched me deeply! I personally had given up on the whole mess and have come to a point where my groaning is barely audible when I hear on every newscast someone say "I should have went there..." or "It don't matter." I have a degree in English and spent several years on the forefront of this battle as a teacher, but have in recent years been a mere psychic and coach without the authority or desire to instruct on language. You have inspired me to take up the cross once again.
I wanted to also give you more ammunition for the cause from my 25 years of study
in the ancient Tarot. I have been in an ongoing course through Builders of the
Adytum (BOTA) (www.bota.org) and wanted to pass on some of the teachings about
the Tower card, which rules the function of speech. Know that I have spent dozens
of hours in study, reading, meditation and exercises on this card, so to reduce
it to a few lines is impossible. But a few words about the concepts are in order.
The Tower itself has 22 courses of bricks, just as there are 22 letters in the Hebrew alphabet, upon which the Tarot is built. In short, the structure upon which we build our life is quite literally language, the main element that separates us from the lower animals. Much can be made of the fact that the tower is built of clay bricks, not stones, and this is why it is shattered with a lightening bolt. The unstable bricks can be thought of as wrong use of words upon which you have built your faulty tower. (Note the Tower of Babel in the Old Testament was also built of clay bricks.)
The Tower card relies strongly on the Biblical notion "In the beginning is the word." Books have been written on this difficult concept but from the Tarot perspective it is very simple. When I teach this class I usually summarize it by saying "First you have to be able to describe what you want orally." All manifestation in our life has to begin with a picture in our mind of what we desire. It has to be describable...definable. As humans we primarily do this with words, unless we are gifted artists. Choosing the correct words and in the proper order is extremely important to attract the attention of the subconscious, or in Huna terms the Lowself. Lowself knows language properly from what we have learned in school, but also from a level below the conscious level...a vibrational or rhythmic level. Lowself knows what is correct language, even if we consciously screw it up, because language developed OUT OF the subconscious in a systematic way. But when we do mess up, we send conflicting messages to Lowself who cannot then go out and manifest what we think we are asking for. Our message, improperly spoken, 'does not compute.'
On an even simpler level, bordering on the rude, if you don't care enough to speak properly you don't deserve what you're asking for. I'm reminded of my annoyance at college professors in the English department who were very rigid about how papers were to be written: double spaces, pages numbered, yada, yada, yada. Now I face the same apparent nonsense from editors as I try to publish a book. For God's sake, ten pages of rules just on the format of the text? But I think the same rule applies: If I don't have enough care and focus on something this simple, perhaps my very thoughts are suspect. It's all about Focus and Attention as shown in the first tarot card, the Magician.
I'll end with a quote from my studies, knowing I'll burn in Hell for profaning the entire Western Mystery Tradition by sharing with the Uninitiated, as the course would describe you....but what the Hell.
"All control of thought is word-control, because every definite ideal can be put into words. Thus, when we say that health, happiness and success come through right thinking, we mean that these desirable conditions are made manifest by right use of language. Conversely, the conditions of sickness, misery and failure follow wrong use of words. Our house of life is built of words and we must be wise in the selections and arrangement of our materials."

TALK IS CHEAP....FREE, ACTUALLY
Remember that I enjoy talking, speaking, preaching, lecturing, and pontificating to groups of whatever nature. It's one of the ways I spread the word to the unenlightened about psychic things as well as the new process of coaching. If you are in a group that would enjoy hearing me talk on how coaching can help, or what happens in a reading, or how to use grape clusters and the very potent Cube exercise, please let me know. I recently spoke to about 100 students in a Portland State Univ. psychology class; later this spring I will speak at a Mensa conference for people with high IQs (secretly hoping they will make me an honorary member or mascot!).

I'm the last to do it, but as of May 1st I will have a new price structure. Anyone signing up for coaching before then will slip in under the old rate. Same for scheduling readings, so hurry up and decide!
New Rates:
30 Minute Reading: $115
60 Minute Reading: $145
Email readings: $95 for two questions
Coaching Intake: remains same at $300
Coaching Session: increase by $10 except for those under initial 3 month contract.

VALENTINE'S DAY---BAH HUMBUG
I know I should write something all lovey-dovey and dripping with gooey sentimentality about the upcoming holiday, but frankly there is enough sweetness out there for this holiday and there are many people who do not relish being reminded that they do not have a Valentine. For many Christmas is an endurance race followed by this sinking feeling that another year has passed without Cupid's attack.
So let's hit this one head-on. What are our options when we have not found love? I always like to ask "What's the worst that could happen?" In this case I suspect it would be to never find a great love.
Here's a clever exercise I have used with several coaching clients. Some have come away with a very different feeling about the place of romance in their life. And in two cases, love came after doing the exercise, ironically enough!
I suggest you go to my website and look at or download the Wheel of Life which divides your life into 8 sections, one of which is Romance or Significant Other. Wheel of LifeThe goal of coaching is to have a more or less balanced wheel, but for the sake of this experiment, let's presume that you cannot have a romance. What if that section is missing or blanked out in your wheel for some reason. Now look at the other segments of your life and put down a number from 0-10 as the directions suggests. Take a few minutes then to look at each segment and jot down some ideas of what it would be like if each could be a 10. What would your perfect career life be? What would you be doing for fun and recreation? But when you do this, you do it with the understanding that you would not have a relationship or marriage.
The point here is to see that you can have a fulfilling life and NOT have a Valentine. In fact, you will probably notice that other segments of your life may actually change if you knew you weren't going to have a romance. Perhaps you would take that job overseas that required you to be single and travel; perhaps you would put more emphasis on friends and family.
I have watched more than one client obsess over relationship and when they did this exercise they claimed they now don't even want one since they can see such a rich life without romance. And those other two clients? Within days of seeing how full their life could be without it, they found their great love! God only knows for sure what this mechanism is, but we've all seen it. When you're finally so sick of wanting something and not getting it and you finally say "Screw it...I don't even want it any more." Presto...it comes. In metaphysics this is called The Release....when you finally have non-attachment to something, release it and it goes out into that other spiritual realm where things are acted on invisibly and then sent back to earth into concrete form.
OR...you could always do the simple Grape Cluster I push all the time. Grape Cluster I average one or two emails per week from people saying they did a cluster on romance and found Mr/Ms Right. I'm not kidding here...it works that often, and particularly in romance. It's the simplest way to get from the subconscious what you really want and bring it into the conscious realm. Go to my website and read the directions and do one but only after reading the example, which does more than anything to show you how to do one.
-----------------------------------------------
VALENTINE'S SPECIAL
OK...I give up....so you won't even try the exercise above but are determined to blindly seek the love of your life and you're looking for some new tool to guide you on your way to Cupid's arrow. I'll do a special just for people who don't have a Valentine and want to know what to do to find one.
Send me an email request for a Valentine's Tarot reading. I'll ask two questions of the cards, draw the cards, and then send you a written explanation of the cards and my interpretation. The questions are: What does the near future hold for me romantically? What do I need to know or do in order to find the love I want?
Cost is $50 payable by cash, check, or credit card. No guarantees....!
------------------------------------------------------
HAVE A PSYCHIC READING DONE ON SOMEONE ELSE??
Sounds like spying?
Could be, in the wrong context. I often have clients asking me to do readings on others and I will refuse if it feels like spying. "Is my ex-boyfriend seeing another woman?" Not for me to see without his permission.
But there are several other situations where you might consider using this unique process for more insight into a person or situation, particularly if you are a professional dealing with your own clients. I have lawyers who come to the office and give me just the names of litigants. "What am I missing in the case of Smith vs. Jones?" I have several therapists who will come to me when they feel stuck with a client who is not moving forward in therapy. I remember telling a psychiatrist that his most troubling patient was hooked on more than one illegal drug, and this was the key to her recovery. Enlightened doctors come to me for help on patients whom they cannot figure out. Sometimes they send the patient, but more often they are reluctant to admit they even know a psychic so the doctor gives me the first name of the patient and I do a reading.
You might look around you. Could you use some insight into a person near you? Would your relationship or experience with them be better if you could just figure them out? The psychic process might be worth a try.

MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS
A STAR IS BORN
Kudos to coaching client L.W. for an exceptional job! She began coaching feeling stuck, as most clients do, and wanted to pursue a new career and lose some weight...during the Christmas holidays no less. She took to coaching like a duck to water and in a month had lost a dozen pounds, decided on a new career, took training to be a coach, and this week started with her first clients. Get out of her way or she'll leave tire tracks on your chest too!
TESTIMONIAL
I have a file folder full of wonderful cards and long heart-felt letters clients have spent much time and thought writing, capturing the warm glow they feel, selecting just the right word to express their sincere gratitude, making poetry of their feelings. This weeks testimonial is from B.J. after she had a burning bush experience in coaching:
"Damn, you're good!"
And yet another less wordy testimonial arrived in an email today from B.J. after she did a simple Grape Cluster on a real estate issue. In reference to her finding a terrific property that fits her needs the day after doing the cluster, she says of the Grape Cluster:
"Damn!"
SPECIAL READING PACKAGE
For those who think you will be having more than one psychic reading in a year, you may want to consider my psychic special. One hour long session and two half hour sessions in a year for $250, a $65 saving.

---------------------------------------------------------
OUT OF THE PSYCHIC CLOSET
Anyone who knows me or my career knows that I've been a psychic for years. Nearly 25 years, I just realized with a shudder. Most people also know that I'm a personal coach, and I often use the psychic process with coaching clients who ask for a reading. So what closet am I coming out of now?
For the many years I have been coaching, I have always made a point of telling clients that I certainly can use the process to help them in coaching and I do free readings for them at any time. I have many stories to tell of the readings being a great help to many clients. But always I have rejected what many clients hoped was the process, that I sort of automatically tuned in to some other source for guidance with clients. I have always made a point of separating a psychic reading from the rest of reality. It is a stand-alone process that I need to do separately and individually. This comes from my fear of the psychic process when I first discovered it. I had many occasions when I would 'tune in' to someone while walking down the street or sitting in a restaurant. Most distracting and inappropriate, so I developed a process of going into a special room in my head and going through a specific process so that 'the psychic thing' only happened under my control.
Well, it was a good theory while it lasted!
Over the past year I have slowly come to a realization that the psychic insights are now coming unbidden. Perhaps they have been all along and I am just now recognizing it. For whatever reason, I now am able to recognize during a coaching session, or even 'on the street' to some degree, when I am getting information that is not coming from inside me. I even know some of the physical sensations that announce the information. I start seeing pictures in my mind's eye just as if I were doing a reading. I remember the exact day when I realized it fully. I remember the client I was talking to. I remember looking out my office window at the normal street scene. And then I remember another client coming into view in my mind and she began to act out a series of pictures that gave me an insight into a whole new way for my phone client to do her business. I even remember the chill going up my spine, which has always been a sign that I needed to listen up to the information.
After this vivid experience with the one client, I have now recognized that it happens often with many clients and I am able to bring a picture to them that enables them to make great strides toward their goals. When I do a coaching session, I always spend several minutes before hand organizing my thoughts about the client, reviewing their action plan, and making notes of what I would like to cover in the session. I can't help it... I'm a Virgo, for God's sake. But now I often realize during the session that I have opened my mouth to describe something my imagination is showing me and it has nothing to do with what I had prepared. It has a very different feel and I have the distinct sense that it comes from somewhere outside of myself. And the wonderful thing is that almost always it is really interesting, creative information that the client reacts positively to. It's way more unique and creative than anything I could have dreamed up.
I'm coming out of this little closet....maybe just a cupboard....to let clients and readers better understand how I coach and how I integrate the coaching and psychic processes. But I think I'm also coming out to force myself to admit that it really does work this way sometimes and now I can't go back into that closet and pretend it doesn't. Of all the psychics you know, I am the most hesitant and reluctant, and in fact one of my future books will surely be titled "The Reluctant Psychic."
Either I have begun to enter a new phase of my psychic development and coaching, or I have realized my worst fear, that I am now nuttier than a fruitcake. (Careful....I heard that!)
If you're interested in coaching, call me to discuss my technique and we can do a free sample coaching session.
--------------------------------------------------------------
EAT CHOCOLATE NAKED....
Nope...you're wrong. You thought this was a cheap ploy to get you to read this, but it's not. It's the title of a book you ought to go buy!
I don't often reveal the name of clients but will in this case since she has mentioned me in her book. Cam Johnson, the adorable blond anchor you may have seen on Cable News Northwest, has just published her book "Eat Chocolate Naked...and 142 other ways to attract attention and spark romance!" Perfect gift for Valentine's Day. Look for it in your neighborhood book store or buy it at Amazon.com. And to make it a special gift, I think I can pull some strings and get her to autograph it for you.
For you fellow writers, have faith. Cam and I started discussing this book months ago in psychic readings and today it's a reality. She even included my offering of metaphysical tools to attract romance in one chapter.
Enjoy Valentine's Day this year in a gooey way!

SPEAKING OF SEX...
This time you're right...this is a cheap ploy to get you to read information you probably don't even want to think about. What topic are people generally more uncomfortable talking about than their sex life? It's their financial life.
I've asked Cindy Morus to give us some easy, free advice on how to improve our financial life, especially after the holidays that can do serious damage to finances.
Go ahead and read this....it won't bite and might give you some insights. And if you need more ongoing help, I highly recommend Cindy's approach. She's not a 'financial planner' trying to sell you anything. She's trained to help people get their financial act together.
1. For many people, this is a difficult month facing the consequences of Christmas bills. Do you have some quick tip that could ease the problem?
I'm not sure it's "quick" but it works. First, take a deep breath and find out how much you actually spent. Don't forget wrapping paper, cards, decorations, extra food, fancy clothes, babysitters, travel, etc. Take a few minutes to see how you feel about that total. Try to identify what you could do differently for next year while it's still fresh in your mind.
Now, determine the amount you want to spend for next year, divide by 10, 11 or 12 (the number of months until you start purchasing) which will tell you how much you need to save every month until then. Take yourself on a field trip to your friendly bank or go to www.ingdirect.com and open a savings account just for Holiday spending. Set up an automatic withdrawal for the monthly amount from your checking account to the savings account. This time next year, you'll congratulate yourself on a "no debt" holiday.
2. I think you were the person who once said, "People are often more comfortable discussing their sex life than their financial life." Do you have any short explanation for that and maybe a suggestion of how to change that?
So true. And if you watch commercials, they send so many mixed signals about money buying the car of your dreams, house of your dreams, spouse of your dreams. (And for everything else, there's Mastercard!). The best antidote for this is to realize that money is just a tool like a hammer, saw or toaster. The "stuff" that's wrapped up with money isn't about money, it's the emotions we attach to money and spills over into how we judge and value ourselves and others. Every person is valuable no matter how much money they make or how big their bank account is. And, sometimes the people who "look" rich have the highest credit card balances to show for it. The average American spends 110% of what they actually make and that's no matter HOW much they make. How do you compare?
As an experiment, try talking to your friends about money and watch their responses. Talk about money with your immediate and extended family. Actually, the more you talk about any personal subject, the more comfortable you'll feel. Don't be embarrassed to ask someone to explain the terminology or products they are talking about. Or if that makes you uncomfortable, write it down and look on the internet or in a book for an explanation. I have several great books and websites listed at www.phelps-creek.com/resources.asp.
Make a resolution in 2004 to learn something about money every day from the internet, a magazine or a book. There are a number of basic articles on my website: www.phelps-creek.com/archives.asp including "Create your own Anti-Emergency Fund" and "Stop those Credit Card Offers". You can also sign up for the monthly "Financial Fitness" newsletter.
3. Briefly explain what kind of help you offer clients. If you're not a 'financial planner,' what are you?
I teach self-employed women and their families how to achieve financial well-being and peace of mind. Who wouldn't want that! As you said, Don, I'm not a financial planner or a stockbroker, insurance sales rep, accountant or attorney or even a therapist. I fill that big hole in the middle for people who just don't know where or who to turn to.
Officially, I'm a Certified Financial Recovery Counselor, although I like to call myself a Wealth Coach. I teach my clients that it doesn't matter how much money they earn, their financial success is dependent upon how much they save/keep and I show them how to do that.
4. If people don't want to discuss finances, how can financial coaching be of any help? Do you have to drag people into your office under a threat?
I wish there was an easy answer for that question! The truth of the matter is that our country has done an excellent job of creating marvelous savings and investment products and making it all so complicated that the normal person feels overwhelmed and doesn't know whom to trust. Our educational system isn't filling in the gaps and our own families weren't able to teach us either. Men, especially, are expected to know all this stuff and be able to do it easily. Think about handing a child a book and telling them to read! Just because you make money, doesn't automatically mean that you know the best ways to handle it.
What I'd like people to know is that there are lots of other people out there who don't know how to "do money" either but it doesn't have to be that way. If you can add, subtract multiply and divide -- the usual 4th grade math skills -- you can do money and do it well. That doesn't mean that you need to know all there is to know -- you need to have enough financial education to ask a lot of questions from many people which will lead to good decisions.
5. From your experience, what is the greatest mistake people make in their financial life? Can you give some freebie advice to fix it?
The greatest mistake people make is not knowing where they want to go. Yogi Berra said, "You've got to be very careful if you don't know where you're going, because you might not get there." So, the freebie advice is to decide what you want and break it down into small steps so you can actually get there. Let's see what that would look like...
How many of you would like to have $1000 by this time next year? All it takes is "not spending" $2.74 per day for 365 days! Can you find $2.74 every day not to spend, put it in a savings account and leave it alone? If so, I guarantee you will have $1000 exactly 365 days from now. However, if you overspend by $2.74 each and every day, you'll end up owing more than $1000 because of the interest. Imagine what you would be worth if you saved every day for the rest of your life! And how about if you increased it every time you got a raise? Wow, it boggles the mind.
Oh, and here's another f*r*e*e* tip: You CAN stop getting those credit card offers. Just call 1-888-567-8688, follow the prompts and provide the requested information including Social Security number, date of birth, etc. You'll need to do this for every person in your household who is receiving offers.
Don, I offer anyone who is interested a 30 minute complimentary Financial Freedom Strategy Session to help them get started on their journey to Financial Freedom. I'd also like to do something special for your readers, but it's got to be a secret! So, have them call or e-mail me to set up their Financial Freedom Strategy Session and I'll tell them the secret Special. It will be the best 30 minute investment they'll ever make.

Fee: $20 check/visa/mc 503-222-0532
In this workshop drum healer, Toby Christensen offers a dynamic and experiential introduction to Sound Attunement Therapy (SAT), and how sound has been used effectively by many spiritual traditions to alter consciousness and heal the body by generating a pattern of energy which calms the mind and rebalances the body.
Participants will be exposed to the healing power of sound through a multitude of tools including Native American hoop, West African Djembe, chimes and tuning forks.
Recent studies suggest that therapeutic drumming increases physical immunity, controls, pain, relieves stress and has been successful in treating serious diseases and emotional disorders. Sound Attunement Therapy works by producing a bioenergetic reconfiguration tm of the client's physical body, mind and emotions to promote health and restore each person's natural healthy rhythms.
Toby Christensen is a master drummer with over 25 years of professional experience in the US and Canada. He has performed frequently as a ritual drummer in both African and Native American ceremonies. He has studied with Sobonfu and Malidoma Some, a Lakota nation Chief and other Native American teachers and studied Shamanism with Michael Harner, the Foundation for Shamanic Studies. HELP! VISUALIZE THIS FOR THE NORTHWEST
Those of us living in the Northwest could use a little help. Most of us have been trapped by an unusual winter storm with several feet of snow; hurricane force winds in places; trees laden with ice crashing onto power lines; inches of ice making travel impossible.
Knowing the power of visualization.....if all of you would visualize this lush tropical scene I'm sure it will help blow the cold away so we can get out of our houses!
Deep breath, Northwesterners.
Patience is a virtue, so we read.
A NEW WAY TO THINK OF GOAL-SETTING
You knew I'd have to say something about goal setting in this new year. I'm a coach...it's my job! But don't stop reading...this is a different way to think of goals.
Most standard goal setting focuses not on the real goal but on the mechanism to reach that goal.
For example: The most common goal is to lose weight in the new year, so people focus on how much weight they want to lose. Nothing pretty or interesting about that. Who wants to focus on fat...or losing anything? Instead, in real goal setting, that person should focus on the 'end picture' of what life would be like with less weight. Perhaps the real goal is to have energy to climb a mountain; to fit into more attractive clothes; to look better to attract a mate. Whichever the reason, the person should be focusing on that rather than on the 'mechanism' to achieve it, which may be weight loss or any number of other things.
Perhaps someone wants to increase their number of sales, or get a new job, or increase their income through their work. Typically people then work out new goals for that need. But again, those 'goals' aren't really goals but the mechanism to attain the real goal. So what is the real goal? Why would you want more sales, or higher income, or a new job? Perhaps it's to have a new car, buy a house, or take more time off. These then are the real goals and what that person should be focused on. The mechanism to attain that goal may in fact be more sales or a new job, or it may take some other form which is fine too, as long as the goal is attained.
It's easier to imagine this if you think of writing it out in three columns. On the left column is a description of where you are now. The right hand column is a picture of where you want to be. The middle column is the 'mechanism' column...the ways you could attain that goal.
Let's say my first column says "I rent my home."
The right hand column, or goal, is "I want to buy a home this year."
Now go back to the middle column and jot down some potential ways that could happen: I could increase my sales by so much; I could look for a different job; I could marry money.
The point here is to focus on getting a new home and let the 'universe' come up with ways to accomplish that. You may guide the universe with suggestions, but it's always more interesting to see what the universe can come up with, which is usually much more creative than we can be.
I challenge you then to look at the different areas of your life and do some real goal setting by thinking of the 'end picture' for each area. To make it easy, go to my website and under Coaching Forms, download the Wheel of Life and use that as a framework for new pictures. Choose a new end picture for each area then do some thinking of some of the many mechanisms that could attain that goal. Then put the wheel away where you can check it periodically throughout the year to see just where you are in each area. This time next year you will be amazed at where you are!
...AND...TO MAKE GOAL-SETTING EVEN EASIER....
Think about having a new psychic reading to start the new year right. Many people get confused and frustrated with goal setting because they're not really sure what they want. This is a perfect reason for a reading. The psychic process can often cut through your own resistance or whatever is keeping you from being honest with yourself. A reading may reveal what you REALLY want and make your goal setting much easier and more honest.
And don't forget about coaching as a way to help you attain your new goals. God invented coaches because we as humans are frail and fragile when it comes to making changes in our lives. We may have all the right goals and lots of enthusiasm and yet find ourselves way off track. A coach 'holds the vision' for you even if you get detoured. A coach can help you see new opportunities and 'mechanisms' for attaining your goal that you were blind to. A coach may be that one more molecule of energy you needed to put you over the edge toward your goal.
