Autumn 2002 - News in Psychic Counseling

IT ISN'T EVEN HALLOWEEN
THIS IS JUST PLAIN TRICKERY!

Jack-O-LanternI have used the following simple technique on a number of my coaching clients and it turned out to be so helpful for them that I wanted to share it with you.  The problem here is that if you read the entire article first, you’ll miss some of the ‘trickery’ in it…   and that can be the juicy part.  At least I enjoyed watching the clients squirm a bit!

If you want to play the game, start by dividing a piece of paper into three columns.  At the top of the first, write My Most Successful Area.  At the top of the middle column, write Qualities.  Leave the third blank.

Now review your life and decide where you feel you are most successful.  Let’s say it’s in your business life.  Now reflect on that awhile.  Why are you successful there?  What qualities make you successful?  Write one of those qualities in the middle column.  Then on the left column, write a brief description of how it works in your business life.  For example, the middle column might have the word TENACITY.  The left column might say “I stuck through tough training needed for the job.”  Maybe the next word is CREATIVITY, and the description on the left might be “Designed new marketing program.”

Keep going with as many qualities as you can to describe what makes you successful in this area of your life.  Take some time to enjoy and revel in your own pride of accomplishment.  Go ahead…  I’ll wait…

Now comes the trickery.  On the top of the third column, write My Least Successful Area.

Let’s say it’s ROMANCE.  The exercise now is to look at the same qualities that have made you successful in one area of your life and see how you can use them in the other area.

I know it sounds too simple.  But let me describe what happens when clients are asked to do this simple technique.  They ALL say “It can’t be done.”  It’s truly amazing.  And I think we all do it…  automatically.  We can see the traits that make us successful, even if we’re a bit shy about admitting them, but we go blank as a door when we try to envision how we could be successful in our failures.  I have had to cajole, prod, and tease clients to even get them to try the exercise, and yet they all found great insight when they finally did it.  It may help to even be ‘off the wall’ if necessary.

For example, take CREATIVITY as a success trait.  How could I use that in romance?  I could write a dynamite Personals Ad.  I could use my creative talents to impress someone.  I could come up with unique ways to find a date or encourage others to set me up.

Once you start playing with the ideas…  even the silly ones…  a transformation begins to occur.  Your mind…  your subconscious…  begins to see at least the possibility of success in this tough area.  That is the crack in the mind that we’re hoping for.  Just the POSSIBILITY of success will lead your mind to begin to understand that the very traits that make you successful in one obvious area of your life can be used in ALL areas of your life.
