“I DO BETTER UNDER ADULT SUPERVISION”

This was spoken not long ago by one of my coaching clients and I almost fell out of my chair laughing.  Because it was so true for him - and all of us.  He was doing much better, which had prompted my question to him.  “Why do you think your life is in better shape now?”  We had been working on introducing him to his subconscious, in the form of a child, and he had taken that concept and made it work magically.  He talked to his little kid all the time and things were going very well in his life.  He felt as though he was once again under adult supervision - which indeed he was - but this time under his OWN supervision moving in directions that HE consciously chose, not going where some other adult supervisor had directed him.

If you've ever wondered why your life doesn't go the way you, the adult, want it to go; if you've ever felt there was an out-of-control part of you determined to undermine your best efforts; if you've ever seen yourself act like a spoiled child; perhaps it would help to acknowledge that yes, in fact, there IS a child inside running your life.

The Hawaiian mystical system called Huna teaches us just that.  It invites us to visualize our subconscious as a child, because that part of us has many child-like qualities.  It often takes in information and draws very wrong conclusions from it.  It sometimes holds on to patterns out of fear that should have been long dead.  On the positive side, that child part has unbridled enthusiasm and energy for creativity in our lives.  Like a good industrious child, it wants to please and do what the adult part asks.

The real issue here is how do we get control of that part of ourselves?

First we need to be able to dialogue with it and know what it already thinks.  There are many methods for this, such as visualization, meditation, journaling.  Find one that appeals to you and start using it.  As the Tarot teaches, first ask questions.  Go to whichever process you use and ask a question.  Find out what that major part of your consciousness already thinks about the issue.  Then, as the intelligent adult that you are, you decide if you want that opinion, pattern, or belief to be operable in your life today.  If you want to change, then again both Huna and Tarot say you can only do that with pictures of what you really want.  You don't need to argue and debate with your ‘inner child’ or try to convince it the existing picture is wrong.  You only need to get it to agree to the new picture.  The kid part of us loves this kind of thing.  It loves pictures, images, creativity.  It thinks it's child's play.  And of course it is, yet it has a tangible affect on the adult part.

If you want to pursue this line of thinking, I encourage you to take action toward controlling this child-like part.  You can take a class from me or get some coaching; you can take classes in person or online from others; you can read books on Huna, my favorite and the simplest being “Huna, An Introduction” by Enid Hoffman; you can read other books on visualization that you find at New Renaissance Books or online; you can develop your own system by just getting quiet, closing your eyes and imagining your child part then encouraging a dialogue.

In no time, you'll be moving forward in your life because the adult part is making the decisions and the wonderful child part is actually helping make them a reality, instead of hiding out in the scary darkness.
