MENOPAUSE IS YOUR FRIEND
Why me, Lord? Why me?
Why would a male psychic devote the lead article in his metaphysical newsletter to menopause? Because it's affecting a huge proportion of my clients, male or female!
In fact it may be one of the greatest single factors in causing upset and pain and unrealized dreams to my clients. So, it seems natural for me to talk about it.
Which is certainly more than we did in the 50's when I was growing up. The Change of Life phrase took on the same atmosphere as other unmentionables, like 'cancer' and 'Communists.' It brought up some of the same vague fears for me as a child. I often heard my mother and grandmother talk about it in hushed tones when they thought I was out of earshot. It didn't seem 'dirty' but it did seem scary. I remember asking what it meant, and my mother explaining that the change meant a woman was no longer a woman. Remember now, this was the 50's! To say the least, this was not a satisfactory explanation, and when my mother suddenly found herself going through this metamorphosis, I can vividly recall the fears I had. If Mom was no longer going to be a woman, then she must change into a man, and would that mean she would be an alcoholic like Dad? And worse, who would cook for us and take care of us, since men certainly couldn't do that. Her behavior changed so radically that I was alternately afraid of her and hateful toward her. When in Hell does this worm turn into a butterfly? It became so unpleasant around the house that, as Dad was proud to say (remember again this is the 50's), We had her fixed.
Fast Forward now to the 90's when we have blue dresses stained with Presidential semen shown on the nightly news; where Lucy and Desi had to sleep in twin beds, we now have group sex shown on TV. Nothing is sacred. We can talk about anything.
So imagine my surprise when I realized over the past year that there is at least one topic many people know virtually nothing about. Menopause. I sit in my office hearing women describe symptoms that make no sense to them, and yet they are classic menopausal symptoms. When I suggest it might just be, they often are shocked and surprised. In short, I am appalled at the lack of information about this major event in women's lives. They often have come for a psychic reading to 'fix' their lives, hoping the psychic will be able to pull down from the heavens some cosmic Fixal, and they are shocked to hear me suggest they see their doctor. Maybe it's not the relationship; or the horrible career; or the dysfunctional upbringing. Maybe it's CHEMISTRY.
Which brings us to the question: how DO you get 'fixed' in the 90's or the 00's? The psychic process is not going to fix it. Prayer and meditation probably will help a bit, but usually not enough. Hysterectomy is certainly one option but as women wise up and doctors grow up it is used less and less.
The first step in my opinion is talking and sharing of information. I suggest women join women's groups or meetings where the topic is openly discussed so they can hear new and creative options. I have known dozens of clients who were adamantly opposed to taking drugs and yet when they talked to women who did they changed their minds and found quick relief.
Go online and find out all you can about the symptoms and solution options.
Go to your doctor and hear his/her suggestions. If you're not satisfied, FIND A BETTER DOCTOR. I'm startled at the patronizing attitude shown to many women by their doctors. This situation is NOT something you simply have to put up with because you are a woman. There are treatments that help.
Go to a nutritionist or Oriental medicine practitioner for strange herbs and spices which have given relief to many.
Go buy a convertible, as one client did. Bye-bye hot flashes!
Go to the bookstore and find new books dealing with the topic.
Go to history. Find out what the ancients felt about this. I was shocked to hear a friend describe her new understanding of menopause. Much in our culture discards women at this period because they are useless, not good for breeding, etc. But apparently it wasn't always so. Earlier cultures honored women after the change because their lives were not focused on reproduction and caregiving and they were in a period of their life when they were much more intune with spiritual forces and the Moon forces. This was a time to revere the woman. How times change! But they can change back again too.
Make an effort to find out more about this important development in your physical, emotional, and spiritual life. With information and a change of attitude, this time which is often regarded as a 'fiend' can actually become much more of a 'friend.' (Careful. I heard that! Easy for HIM to say!)
