THE CHEMISTRY...  OF SPIRITUALITY?

And you thought Alchemy died in the Middle Ages!  Perhaps that is a good place to begin...  with alchemy.  Generations have thought that alchemists were trying to change lead into gold, when all along they used that as a ruse to hide the fact that they were really trying to change their own bodies and have absolute mastery over them.  The ancient dictum was “First the body, then the mind, then the spirit.”

Many of us with a metaphysical bent have strayed from this teaching and want to reach some kind of spiritual nirvana by leaping over the physical and mental, when in truth the physical is the solid base, or launching pad, to attain to the spiritual.  Anyone who has taken my Tarot class knows how much emphasis I...  or really the Tarot...  put on the physical and our chemistry.  The final card in the deck, the World card, which is the goal of “heaven” we all strive for, is actually the card which rules the endocrine system, that series of seven little glands such as thyroid and adrenals, which run our bodies.  In effect, this card system of ancient wisdom is saying that to reach your personal heaven, in whatever regard, you must have all the energy systems...  “chakras” or glands...  in perfect balance.  In other words, we cannot smoke two packs a day, overeat till we bloat, or abuse our bodies in any way and still expect to have fulfillment in our lives.

So the BODY is the place to begin your elusive “spiritual” growth.  I refer vast numbers of my clients to doctors for work on their energy systems.  Most are surprised to come for a psychic reading and be told they need a thyroid check or adrenal supplement.

Another growing group of clients attracted to the psychic process is people with Attention Deficit Disorder.  Talk about chemical imbalance!  These people are often frustrated and frantic to find order in their lives and hope the psychic will wave his magic wand and make their lives go forward.  Instead, I refer them to testing and suggest they return when their chemistry is under control to talk about using my services as a Coach to help give them structure and routine to their lives.

But notice that the physical, chemical order is the first area of work, and then the coaching or whatever method the client chooses can have a chance at success.  Another group of people who throw themselves on the psychic pyre are those who are depressed and/or menopausal.  These people are often desperate and come to the psychic for a last hope of relief, only to be told they need to see a doctor.

Nothing compares to depression when it comes to holding you back from your “spiritual” quest.  I've been there!  It's not only pointless but often traumatizing for me to describe pictures of wonderful career opportunities and romantic relationships when the client doesn't have the fire to get out of bed.  “But I won't take medication. I only want a 'natural' way to relief.”  Too late!  God knows the '60s' alone did more damage to me than Prozac ever could!  And since when is it “natural” to breathe air filtered through automobile exhaust systems, drink water “purified” by corporations, or eat food that has never seen the sun?

Personally, I'm willing to use unnatural methods to combat unnatural problems.  But if you're not, then there are certainly many ways to improve your chemistry.   Many supplements work directly on the endocrine system to heal it; St. John's Wort works on depression for millions; doctors can test your food sensitivities to relieve problems; nutritional systems like blue-green algae or Sunrider nutritional supplements are designed to bring us back to a natural state of health.

And just maybe, when you get your body balanced and healthy, you will find spiritual fulfillment, and you may be surprised to find it in the physical, material world and not in that ethereal “other” realm.  Maybe you'll be deeply touched when you, hike a mountain and see the sunset.  Maybe you'll have a deep sense of pride and attainment when you lose weight and have the body you really want.  Maybe you'll find the love of your life...  your soul mate...  when you have the energy, enthusiasm, and pizzazz to go out to an event and are so attractive to that person they can't resist your glow.

Those weird old alchemists just may have had the right idea!  You don't have to venture far into the inner world to discover that it is in many respects and at many levels, the world of the body.  As an Oriental maxim puts it:
