Autumn 2002 - Case Study in Psychic Counseling
TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE
I generally don’t like doing readings with two people in the room. I remember years ago doing a 30 minute reading on a client where nothing I said seemed to fit her life, only to discover her friend who wanted to ‘sit in’ was in tears of rage at me for having disclosed her most private situations. I decided then to only have one person in the room at a time.
But that rule doesn’t apply when I do couples’ counseling, which I do more and more. In fact, I recommend and encourage it and only wish I had thought of if for myself a few years ago when I stumbled into a blind alley called a relationship. I think the psychic perspective on a relationship could add unusual insight into potential areas of problem or missed opportunities.
John and Mary illustrate one possible outcome to a reading. They came wide-eyed and hopeful at the prospect of having the blessings of the psychic process, which to them meant the blessings of God. Little did they know what it would reveal.
It was clear to me in the reading that Mary was not at all interested in having children, but very interested in a career in her own business. I assumed this had been discussed, and apparently it had, but John did not understand the depth of her feelings. I think he felt she would easily give in to the idea of having a family, which was important for him. In their discussion in my office, he even made the mistake of saying something to the effect that “Having a baby is a woman’s mission in life.” Oops. Not this woman’s! While they had discussed the facts of the situation, only from the reading did they learn each other’s true, deep feelings on the baby issue. And while it was very uncomfortable to me and to them at the time, it was important information for all to have.
The reading also revealed to me that John was, if not actually seeing another woman, very interested in one. I saw him deeply connected to a woman from his past, and while I was uncomfortable with the information, I felt compelled to reveal it. After all, they HAD asked! When confronted, he admitted that he was still in contact with an old girlfriend and did have strong feelings for her, even though he had told Mary he was through with the relationship.
Needless to say, it was no surprise to me a month later to hear from Mary that wedding bells would not be chiming for these two. And needless to say, I have not seen John for another reading!
A more positive ending came after a reading for Jane and Jill, a lesbian couple who were stuck in indecision over making a commitment to each other. For several months, they went back and forth about having a ceremony and/or moving in with each other. Nothing seemed able to push them to decide one way or another. Maybe a psychic reading would nudge them?
The first issue in the reading was the interest they both had in starting their own business. To my surprise, this issue had never really been discussed. I even told them the kind of business I thought they would like… a bed and breakfast, or some similar type of business ‘catering’ to people. When I dropped this bombshell in the office, it was as if two people suddenly realized they were related. “I never knew you wanted to do that!” “But this is exactly what I’ve always wanted to do.” From that moment on, they had no interest in anything I said and could hardly wait to get out of the office to start planning the business.
A month later, I got an email from one of them saying “We’ve scuffed the boots.”
What? Did I miss something.
Only later that day did I realize what they meant. They knew I had purchased an expensive pair of cowboy boots and was so hesitant, I had asked the clerk if I could take them for a couple days and return them if I decided against them. (There is so little call these days for psychic cowboys.) The clerk said I could if I didn’t scuff the soles. The day after buying them, in a fit of self confidence, I went to the garage and scuffed the soles hard, committing myself to the boots for life.
This is the metaphor these two women loved and was their way of telling me they had made the leap to a committed relationship.
